Description
The ASLAV is a family of  8x8 light armoured vehicle which was manufactured based on the American-made LAV-25 under a program for the Australian army. The vehicle was built by the Canadian Company Diesel Division, General Motors which is now General Dynamics Land Systems - Canada. In 1992, Australia signed a A$120 million (US$85 million) contract with the Canadian Commercial Corporation for 97 LAV 8x8 armoured vehicles to be built in Canada. The first delivery was completed in 1994 and Australia has purchased a total of 111 vehicle in different variants. The versatility of the ASLAV has been further increased by the use of non-permanent mission role installation kits. The kits allow the generation of several variants from a single ASLAV hull design. This is a unique Australian Defence Force (ADF) capability, with much of the design and development work undertaken in Australia. Late in 2003, the Australian Department of Defence awarded General Dynamics Land Systems - Canada a USD9.8 million modification to a previously awarded contract to upgrade its existing fleet of 113 ASLAVs, which were delivered to Australia between 1995 and 1997. These are being upgraded to match the capabilities of the new batch of 144 ASLAVs, which have been manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems - Canada for the Australian Army. The ASLAV upgrade includes a new electric turret drive, enhanced thermal sight with laser range-finder and improved fire-control system for the 25 mm M242 cannon. In addition, a GPS system has been integrated and the suspension system enhanced.

Armament
The ASLAV-25 armoured infantry fighting vehicle variant is fitted with a two-man turret armed with 25 mm ATK Gun Systems Company M242 Chain Gun as main armament, one 7.62mm MAG58 coaxial machine gun mounted to the right of the main cannon and one 7.62mm MAG58 anti-aircraft machine gun mounted to the right hatch of the turret. A stabilization system allows the 25 mm M242 cannon to be aimed while the vehicle is moving across the country. A bank of four 76mm smoke grenade dischargers is mounted at the front on each side of the turret. The other ASLAV variants are armed with a 12.7 mm or 7.62mm machine gun. Some ASLAV-PCs have been fitted with the Norwegian Kongsberg Protector Remote Weapon Station 12.7mm machine gun as a replacement for the unpowered gun ring system originally fitted.
Design and protection
The hull and the turret of the ASLAV are made in all-welded steel which provides a protection for the crew against the firing of small arms and shell splinters. The layout of the ASLAV-25 is very similar to the US LAV-25 used by the US Marine Corps, with the driver at the front on the left with the power pack to his right., turret in the middle and troops compartment at the rear. To improve protection, the ASLAV can be fitted with a ceramic appliqué armour system. The add-on armour fitted on the vehicle provides all-round protection against projectiles of up to 14.5mm. The add-on armour over the frontal arc protects the vehicle from 30mm projectiles. For the latest operations of the Australian army in Afghanistan, the ASLAV was upgraded with wire cage armour to increase protection against RPG (Rocket-Propelled Grenade) threats.
Mobility
The ASLAV uses an eight-wheeled suspension system with power-assisted steering on front 2 axles. The front four wheels are equipped with independent coil springs suspension and shock-absorbers while the rear four wheels are fitted with independent torsion bars suspension and shock-absorbers. The ASLAV is motorized with a Detroit Diesel Model 6V-53T diesel engine developing 275 hp coupled to an Allison MT653 fully automatic transmission with 5 forward and 1 reverse gears. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 660 km. The ASLAV is able to cross trenches of 2 m wide and climbs a vertical obstacle of 0.5m maximum.
Accessories
The ASLAVs are fitted with an electric turret, enhanced drive train, improved thermal optics, and integrated laser range finder. Selected vehicles are also fitted with remote weapon stations and multi-system surveillance suites. All the ASLAV vehicles are fitted with a climate control system to bring internal temperatures down to ambient levels and all vehicles are fitted with Michelin XML tires that are wider. The ASLAV is fully amphibious and propelled in the water at a maximum speed of 12 km/hr by two propellers mounted on either side at the rear of the hull. The vehicle is also able to climb 60% slopes and traverse a side slope of up to 30% fully loaded.
