Armament
The PR50 122mm MLRS is armed with 40 barrels 122mm rocket launcher mounted at the rear of the chassis and additional pack of 40 rockets to the rear of the cab for rapid reloading. The 122mm launcher unit consists of two blocks of 20 rocket launchers, each in 4 rows of 5-barrels mounted above each other on a rotating cradle assembly. Elevation and traverse are performed by electrical systems. A hydraulically operated collapsible awning is mounted over the rear deck for use as protection and camouflage. The fin-stabilized rockets used are of the 122 mm caliber extended-range composite FG-42 solid propellant type. The 122mm rocket has a total weight of 74 kg and a length of 2946 mm. These rockets can be launched by other 122 mm multiple rocket systems use in the Chinese armed forces.
Design and protection
The layout of the PR50 is standard with the crew cabin at the front, a crane just back of the crew cab and the launch unit at the rear of the chassis. Two hydraulic jacks are fitted at the rear of the chassis which are deployed on the ground to minimize the effect of uneven ground or vibration during firing. A crane is mounted at the rear of the crew cabin for loading and unloading operations.
Propulsion
The PR50 122mm rocket launcher system is based on a 6x6 chinese truck chassis.
Operations
A battery of PR-50 122mm rocket launcher system consists of HF-122 rocket launch vehicles, a fire command vehicle, loading truck and meteorological truck station. Conversion to the combat mode takes between 90 sec. and 120 sec. following arrival at the launch site. The PR50 122mm takes less than 7 minutes to take firing position, aiming, fire rockets and leave his position.
