DRDO of India has successfully test-fired Indian-made Nirbhay long-range cruise missile.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India has test-fired the new home-made cruise missile Nirbhay from a defence base off Odisha coast on Tuesday, December 20, 2016. Nirbhay is an all-weather, long-range cruise missile capable of carrying conventional and nuclear warheads with a range from 750 to 1,000 km.

The surface version of the missile was test-fired for the first time on 12 March 2013 and was partially successful. The second test, performed on 17 October 2014 was the fist successful test of the subsonic missile. The missile was tested again on 16 October 2015 to analyse its low-flying capabilities.

The two-stage Nirbhay missile has a length of six meters, the diameter of 0.52 m, wing span 2.7 m and a launch weight of about 1,500 kgs. Bengaluru-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) has designed the missile.

The missile is powered by a solid rocket booster for take off which is developed by Advanced Systems Laboratory(ASL).

The Nirbhay missile can carry warheads ranging between 300 kg and 400 kg and a total of 24 types of warheads can be attached based on mission requirements. It can be launched from multiple platforms including aircraft, land-based vehicles/launchers, ships and submarines and shall be inducted into Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force.
