Operation Shield 2024 is an annual event hosted by Croatia, designed to enhance proficiency in air defense tactics against low and medium-altitude threats. This year's exercise saw a comprehensive live-fire drill, emphasizing real-time air-space control and coordination among the participating nations.

The exercise also included training on the integration and coordination of various air defense assets, reinforcing the strategic importance of interoperability among NATO allies. This aligns with the U.S. Army's ongoing efforts to strengthen air and missile defenses as part of its broader modernization and readiness initiatives in response to evolving global threats.

Operation Shield 2024 not only showcases the technical capabilities of advanced military hardware like the AVENGER AN/TWQ-1 but also underscores the importance of multinational training exercises in fostering unity and operational alignment among NATO member states. This initiative is a testament to NATO's commitment to safeguarding its members through collective defense and sophisticated military readiness.

A focal point of the exercise was the utilization of the AVENGER AN/TWQ-1 mobile air defense system by the U.S. Army. Since its introduction in 1988, the Avenger has been extensively used by U.S. military forces in numerous international conflicts and peacekeeping missions, proving its effectiveness across diverse combat environments. The U.S. has also provided Avenger systems to Ukraine to help defend against Russian forces, enhancing Ukraine's capabilities to protect critical civilian infrastructure.

The Avenger Air Defense System, designated as AN/TWQ-1, is a critical short-range air defense platform developed by the United States. Mounted on a high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV), it features a gyro-stabilized air defense turret with two pods, each capable of holding four Stinger missiles. These missiles are effective against low-altitude threats, including helicopters, cruise missiles, fixed-wing aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The system is equipped with advanced targeting technologies such as a forward-looking infrared sensor (FLIR), a laser range finder, and a computerized fire control system, enabling engagement of targets in various conditions including night and adverse weather.

The American Avenger has seen several upgrades over the years to enhance its capabilities, including adaptations for remote operation and integration with broader military command and control systems. This ongoing evolution ensures the Avenger remains a vital component of U.S. and allied military operations, offering critical air defense coverage and contributing to the comprehensive air and missile defense strategy. Its adaptability and dependability continue to make it an essential asset in safeguarding ground units from aerial attacks, particularly valuable in modern hybrid warfare environments where air superiority is crucial.

The U.S. AVENGER can engage aerial threats at altitudes up to 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) and has a range of up to 8 kilometers (5 miles).
