The American company GDLS (General Dynamics Land Systems) unveils its new TRX SHORAD, a new robotic short-range air defense system based on the modular Tracked Robot 10-ton (TRX) technology demonstrator. The new TRX variant will be presented for the first time during the Association of the U.S. Army’s Global Force Symposium & Exposition, scheduled for March 28 to 30, 2023, at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala., United States.

The modular Tracked Robot 10-ton (TRX) technology demonstrator supports Army objectives for a Robotic Combat Vehicle. Displayed at Global Force with Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD) payload for the first time, this TRX variant is the latest innovation within Land Systems’ counter-Uncrewed Aerial Systems (c-UAS) family of vehicles.

The TRX SHORAD introduces an innovative level of combat capability to SHORAD units, promoting self-reliance within a stratified, multi-layered air defense system. The flatbed architecture of the TRX enables seamless integration of any payload and offers a best-in-class payload-to-chassis ratio of 1:1. Capable of swiftly maneuvering alongside various formations, the TRX is transportable via CH-47 and C-130 aircraft.

The TRX SHORAD features a remotely controlled weapon station outfitted with a single 30mm automatic cannon and a pair of quartets of missile launchers, designed to launch Stinger surface-to-air missiles. As a shoulder-launched, heat-seeking, surface-to-air missile (SAM), the Stinger is primarily employed to target low-altitude aircraft and helicopters.

The combination of the Stinger missile and a 30mm cannon provides a comprehensive air defense capability for ground forces against various aerial threats.

On the other hand, the 30mm cannon is an automatic weapon with a high rate of fire, capable of engaging both air and ground targets. It is particularly effective against low-altitude, slow-moving aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that may operate at closer ranges.

Together, the Stinger missile and the 30mm cannon provide a layered air defense system that can respond to a wide range of threats with different engagement ranges and target types, ensuring maximum protection for ground forces and assets.

With its tracked mobility system, the TRX can navigate through challenging terrains, while its modular structure enables the integration of different equipment and payloads to meet specific mission objectives.
