Thales and Rosoboronexport signed several contracts for transfer of technology.

Russian BMP-3 Armoured Infantry fighting vehicle

Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport said Tuesday it had signed several contracts with the French defense firm Thales on the transfer of technology and delivery of communications equipment for Russian armored vehicles. "The first contract involves transfer of technologies to Russia, which now will have the right to produce officially licensed thermal imagers at Vologda Optical and Mechanical Plant," said Igor Sevastyanov, Rosoboronexport deputy director general.

"The second contract provisionally allows Russia to bring in communications equipment for integration into Russian armored vehicles for testing," Sevastyanov said. He added that the communications equipment would be mounted on T-90 tanks and BMP-3 armored personnel carriers. Rosoboronexport did not specify the sum of the contracts.

The plant in the city of Vologda in central European Russia will assemble the Thales-developed thermal imaging cameras. Localized production will allow Russia to reduce production and maintenance costs by at least 5-10% and manufacture thermal imagers for civilian purposes in the future. Civilian uses of the thermal imagers could include monitoring the efficiency of thermal insulation and detection of heat leaks, among other applications.

Russia may only be able to export thermal imagers produced at its plant with the permission of the French authorities. The list of potential customers will exclude so-called rogue states such as Iran. According to experts, Russia is lagging 20-30 years behind the West in many areas of technological progress and has recently started attempting to close the gap by purchasing production licenses abroad.

CT-CV Weapon System successfully demonstrated its gun launched missile capability.

This GLATGM ability increases even more the CT-CV Weapon System’s capability to provide modern armed forces with a fully effective response to demanding operational challenges. It delivers immediate, precise and lethal effects against comprehensive set of targets at short and extended ranges, based on a balanced combination of conventional and smart tank munitions, gun-launched missiles and heavy machine guns.
These effects are enhanced through a single auto-loaded weapon system that allows the selective loading and firing of multiple ammunition options including gun-launched missiles, from under armour.
Co-developed with the State Kyiv Design Bureau “Luch”, the Falarick 105 is a 105 mm calibre missile specifically designed to be launched from the Cockerill CV gun, itself a proprietary development by CMI Defence.
With its laser beam guidance system, the Falarick 105 is able to wipe out fixed & moving armoured targets, helicopters and fortifications at a distance of 5 kilometres. Its tandem hollow-charged warhead allows it to destroy targets under 550 mm of armour and behind ERA or their equivalent.
Its name refers to the falarica, a heavy javelin used by Iberians. Thanks to its long, thin iron head with a narrow sharp tip, it was an excellent armour-piercing weapon.

New integrated weapons system FN Herstal called the MPV (Medium Vehicle Pintle)

(Herstal, Belgium) – June 8, 2010. Following market requirements, Belgium-based firearms manufacturer FN Herstal has recently designed and developed a new integrated weapons system called the Medium Vehicle Pintle (MVP) that provides vehicles operated by Armed Forces - and Special Forces in particular - with maximum firepower.
The Medium Vehicle Pintle is derived from technology that has contributed to FN Herstal's success in airborne applications over the recent years.

FN Herstal MPV Medium Vehicle Pintle Weapons System

The MVP features:
- the exclusive .50 cal M3P/M3M (GAU-21) machine guns, which is currently in use on more than 2,500 helicopters and subsonic aircraft worldwide, providing a high firing rate of 1,100 rounds per minute and featuring unique operating angles (±80° elevation and ±80° depression)
- a soft mount system that absorbs recoil forces and guarantees outstanding balance during burst and unequalled firing accuracy
- a 300-round ammunition box mounted on the pintle head, which eliminates the need for a flexible chute
- a telescopic shoulder brace which ensures maximum comfort for short and long range target acquisition
- a standard pintle connection interface for easy installation on the vehicle
- an optional links collector.

The MVP is a fully mechanical system that does not require any electrical power to function, making firing possible even under extreme conditions of electrical power loss of vehicle.
The well thought out design of the MVP has resulted in the most powerful and reliable vehicle weapons system on the market, combining light weight, compact size and optimum efficiency.
The Medium Vehicle Pintle will be on display in FN Herstal's booth at EUROSATORY in Paris from 14 to 18 June 2010 (Belgian Pavilion, Hall 6, Stand No. F201).

Panasonic launches the new TOUGHBOOK CF-U1 and CF-31 at Eurosatory 2010

Panasonic Toughbook CF-31

Panasonic today launched its new Toughbook CF-31, the flagship product in its ruggedized range. Designed to access applications and data in the most extreme mobile computing environments, the CF-31 is the latest incarnation of the Toughbook, which has been developed through five generations over the past decade.

The CF-31 replaces the CF-30, which has become the fully rugged device of choice for utilities, emergency services and military personnel. And the latest device, which is available in three different models (Value, Standard and Performance) looks set to continue that domination with its increased durability, improved performance and long battery life.

Increased performance
The CF-31 delivers CPU performance twice that of the CF-30 in almost the same sized package. Its desktop-performance computing power is delivered by the Intel® Core i5® with vPro technology in the Performance and Standard models. The devices are designed to take advantage of Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and Intel® Multi-Threading to maximize the performance of the CPU.
The top of the range model also has a switchable graphics capability, allowing users to switch between the enhanced graphics performance of the dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon™ high-end HD 5650 graphic chip, with 512MB dedicated RAM; and the internal Intel® HD graphics, to save power when on the move.

Screen visibility even in direct sunlight
The ability to see data and applications on screen in bright sunlight is essential for field workers. The CF-31 uses Panasonic’s Circular Polarizing technology in its Standard and Performance models to deliver market leading clarity with brightness displays of 1,000 nits and a very low reflection ratio on its touchscreen, 13.1” XGA display. The CF-31 also contains a floating mounted LCD design to protect from screen shocks.

Better than ever reliability and durability
With magnesium alloy casing, inside and out, and Panasonic’s anti-scratch and thermally reflective coatings, the CF-31 is the toughest Toughbook to date. It is MIL-STD 180cm drop tested and has increased water, dust, vibration and temperature protection over the CF-30 giving it an impressive IP65, MIL STD 810G rating. With HDD damping and rugged casing systems to optimise drop protection and an HDD heater and Panasonic’s foam packing system to provide flexible seals, the CF-31 can operate in even the harshest conditions. The CF-31 is equipped with a Hybrid Cooling System combining a passive and active cooling process. In the passive process heat is distributed by pipes from heat critical areas to the cooling hub.

Built to stay connected on the move
To help field engineers stay connected on the move, the CF-31 has an expanded wireless capability with embedded screen-mounted radio antenna offering optimal radio performance over WWAN (optional), WLAN, WIMAX (optional) and Bluetooth. It also includes a dedicated wireless switch allowing users to switch connections on and off to improve operating time.

Flexibility to configure
Adapting to fast changing circumstances is also an essential capability for a field device. The CF-31 has on project basis a built-in configurable additional slot for a 2nd LAN, firewire or modem. New interfaces in the form of 4 USB ports, a HDMI port and optional webcam complete the CF-31 product package.

The power to last
To ensure that field technicians and engineers have a device that can work for as long as they do, even when access to power is lost, the CF-31 Standard model can operate for up to 11.5 hours running on Windows 7. All units also use the Panasonic Power Management Utilities technology to maximize power efficiency by managing the power of all relevant resources required by the CPU for each task. In addition, the CF-31 runs on Panasonic’s own high-capacity battery cells designed to deliver maximum device performance and
safety.

Compatibility that counts
To ensure existing customers can continue to use the peripheral equipment, the CF-31 is compatible with the CF-30 and CF-29 car mounts and other peripherals such as screen protectors, docking stations and batteries from the previous generation.

Backed by outstanding service
Every Toughbook comes with a 3-year warranty covering hardware failures for systems used as designed; with a 48-hour repair commitment and a 5-year spare parts guarantee.

Panasonic today launched its revolutionary 3-in-1 identity checking solution designed for mobile border control, policing and security forces. The Person Identification Mini Dock (PIMD) includes an OCR and RFID Reader as well as Fingerprint Scanner and connects to the Toughbook CF-U1 ultra mobile PC device. A lighter 2-in-1 version without the fingerprint scanner is also available.

Compact, rugged and lightweight, the PIMD is ideal for mobile workers, such as border control personal, who need to check identities whilst on the move. It is equipped with the best components from the leading manufacturers in mobile identification, including DESKO™, Dermalog™ and HID Global™. The PIMD is a co-development from Panasonic and DESKO in a rugged case with MIL-STD and IP certification. It also delivers the highest security standards with separate power management and a standby mode.

DESKO-designed OCR Reader for Passports and ID cards
The DESKO-designed OCR ID document reader checks 2 and 3 line passports and ID documents to ICAO 9303 standard. It uses OCR swipe technology with a small and compact micro OCR camera for mobile passport reading at a speed of 72-90 characters per half second. Reading errors are low as a result of DESKO’s proven algorithm reading support software. The device is easy to use with a high optical picture quality of 400dpi.

HID Global RFID Module
The integrated HID Global RFID module with its user-friendly, document holding clip and standard PC-SC interface to support biometric reading is ideal for reading biometric passports or ID cards and other RF documents (i.e. Mifare type a/b). It is one of the fastest RFID modules on the market, with transfer rates up to 848kbps, and is designed for outside use with its RF Board coated to provide a high level of water protection. The module supports Basic and Extended Access Control and complies with ICAO 9303, ISO 14443 and
ISO 15693 standards. The RF board follows BSI standards for biometric passport reading.

Market-leading Fingerprint Reader
The Dermalog high quality optical fingerprint reader has the ability to identify fingerprints from the living and dead, as well as fake plastic fingerprints. Unlike many devices, the module is able to capture accurate readings when fingerprints are rolled onto the reader from right to left or left to right. Images are easy to view on a 24x16mm display at a resolution of 500dpi. The module creates a small image memory size for easy processing, with a raw image size of 150kb and a compressed file at just 18kb. The module is BSI and FIPS certified.

CF-U1 ultra mobile PC device

Combined with the CF-U1, data from the PIMD can be immediately processed by the device operating system or via an optional WWAN, which can synchronise live with data held on a central server. A full-function operating system (Windows® XP or Windows Vista®) makes the CF-U1 the perfect fit as all captured ID-Information can be directly processed on an office-like platform by the fully ruggedized Toughbook CF-U1 which maximizes functionality and connectivity in a compact size with extreme durability. Data can be input through either the keyboard, or with a pen or finger on the 5.6-inch touchscreen which is viewable even in direct sunlight. With the WSVGA resolution (1024 x 600), 2GB of memory, a 64GB solidstate hard drive and an energy efficient 1.6 GHz Intel® Atom CPU, the CF-U1 provides optimal battery-performance balance. While the standard WLAN and Bluetooth deliver the latest wireless technologies, the optional integrated HSDPA, GPS and other applicationspecific modules make the CF-U1 together with the PMID the perfect “Mobile Personal Identifier Solution” even in the most demanding working conditions.

Backed by outstanding service
Every PIMD comes with a 2-year warranty covering hardware failures for systems used as designed; with a 96-hour total turnaround time commitment and a 5-year spare parts guarantee.

LAPV 6.X concept vehicle
The third new innovation — the LAPV 6.X concept vehicle — will augment the very mobile LAPV 5.4 light armored patrol vehicles from the G-Class. Series production of these vehicles for the German military will commence at the time EUROSATORY is held. The LAPV 6.X concept vehicle will improve on the LAPV 5.4 modular in the areas of protection (Level 3), offroad capability, and, above all, agility. In doing so, it will make maximum use of the G-Class modular system.

7.X concept vehicle
The fourth world-class innovation is the 7.X concept vehicle, which combines the properties of two different Mercedes-Benz model series. As is the case with the two lighter LAPVs, the vehicle’s engine/transmission and cockpit are taken from the G-Class, while the frame and the axles are from the Unimog range. Because the larger vehicle, the LAPV 7.X, uses components from the Unimog modular system, it opens up an entirely new dimension of all-terrain capability for a patrol vehicle.

The long-nose Zetros truck will be represented at the Mercedes-Benz stand in two versions: as an unprotected three-axle flatbed truck with special military equipment and as an armored test vehicle for the Australian Overlander project.
As an expression of the brand’s high mobility transport expertise for the roughest terrain, the Mercedes-Benz stand will also feature two Unimog U 5000 vehicles. A veritable legend that is unparalleled in its range of applications is the all-terrain Unimog U 5000 series for difficult operations in areas without roads or tracks. The Unimog is the most capable all-terrain vehicle in the world.
These vehicles embody like no others the traditional Mercedes-Benz brand attributes of robustness, reliability, economy, and safety, and they underscore the brand’s heritage and its many years of expertise in building trucks.
Today’s military missions require commercial vehicles that feature customized solutions for fulfilling a wide range of different tasks. As the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles with payloads between 0.5 and 110 tons, Mercedes-Benz offers the most extensive range of vehicles for meeting many different logistical and tactical requirements. Mercedes-Benz has a comprehensive range of all-wheel-drive vehicles that extends from SUVs, vans, and partially militarized versions of the Atego, Axor, and Actros trucks to the all-terrain Unimog and Zetros vehicles and the Actros heavy-duty tractor unit.
Mercedes-Benz’ commercial vehicles for military mobility are supported by a unique service program called Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) which provides the vehicles with a standardized maintenance concept. Mercedes-Benz supports its military customers by sending its service representatives all the way to the scene of operations. In combination with the use of parts and components from the series-produced versions of the vehicles, this results in a high level of fleet availability as well as low lifecycle costs and therefore an optimized total cost of ownership.

SESM: power-packs for military vehicles improved mobility, improved vehicle availability

The typical roles and missions of MBTs have evolved over time. Today, MBTs have to fulfil a broad range of missions, incl. peacekeeping and others.
This has led to numerous changes in their typical specification. What has not changed over all these years is one key requirement: users are still expecting a maximum level of mobility, even if vehicle weights are increasing due to higher protection levels etc. Another unchanged key requirement is that users expected, and they will continue to do so, a maximum level of reliability. Armies need a high level of availability of their vehicles, even when operating them over many years in missions far away from home.

“Maximize MBT mobility and availability” is the mission of SESM, a French company member of the German group RENK, world specialist in automatic transmissions for MBT. Located at 30km from Paris, SESM develops and produces modern powerpacks for military vehicles.

One of its flagship products, the Powerpack ESM350 (maximum 1200hp), is dedicated to modernization or new production programmes of T-90 and T-72 based vehicles, providing them unprecedented mobility.

Thanks to the fully automatic powershift transmission including steering by a steering wheel, the driver can really focus on his mission. The fatigue due to the repeated efforts on the two brake-lever steering, the risk to damage the transmission by a wrong manoeuvre, the possibility to destroy the engine by over-speed or overheat are now forgotten. The transmission electronic management selects always the most adequate gear, whatever the terrain. The engine power is now used in the most intelligent manner, extending the engine lifetime and reducing the fuel consumption. The shifting time, reduced to some tens of milliseconds, cancels the torque interruption while shifting, enabling continued accelerations on steep slopes for example. On the contrary to the original manual gearboxes, the gear shifting can occur at any time, while steering, braking or accelerating. New features, like true pivot on the spot or infinitely variable steering radii, make the vehicle much more mobile also for urban environments. The engine options include the various upgrades based on the original T-90/T-72 engine and different western diesel engines (France, Italy), up to 1200hp. All together, the mobility of the vehicle is significantly improved.

But a modern Powerpack is not only an intelligent transmission coupled to a powerful engine. It also includes a high performance cooling system making the full engine power available even in extremely hot (desert) conditions. The air flow generated by two high speed fans is automatically adjusted depending on the cooling needs. This provides a stable coolant temperature, good for the engine lifetime as well.

Very compact, the Powerpack ESM350 fits into either a T-90 or any T-72 and derivatives (PT-91, M-84) without deep modification of the chassis. Versatile, it can be installed in a MBT, an ARV, an AVLB or an AEV in less than one hour, even in the battlefield. This quick replacement simplifies drastically the maintenance and logistics, the vehicle downtime are reduced to a minimum. This leads to an excellent fleet availability, limiting the total number of vehicles of the fleet for a maximized number of vehicles in service.

This Powerpack has been selected by the Malaysian Armed Forces to equip their brand new MBT, the PT-91M produced by the Polish group Bumar.

For heavier applications (greater than 50 tons class vehicles), SESM offers high-end Powerpacks with similar features but with engine power up to 1500hp. In service in the French Leclerc and successfully tested in the MBT2000 (Al-Khalid), the fully automatic powershift transmission ESM500, comprises a secondary retarder and a torque converter, 5 speed forward and 2 speed reverse. The braking system, separated from the transmission, includes dry carbon-carbon disk technology, providing extremely high deceleration. The powerful hydrostatic steering unit allows a 360° pivot on the spot in less than 10 seconds.

Original designer of the transmission ENC200 of the French AMX30B2, SESM offers also upgrade packages for the AMX30 and derivatives (air defence Shahine, artillery AUF1). A modern diesel engine, up to 750hp, coupled to the semi-automatic transmission ENC200 (fully automatic in option) and an efficient cooling system is proposed.

With a lot of Powerpack integration experiences in the world, SESM can manage the complete work in collaboration with local partners.

SESM is the company selected by the French Army for the maintenance of the Leclerc and the AMX30B2 transmissions.

Modern powerpacks for T-72, T-90 and other MBTs

Until today, the T-72 remains one of the most popular MBTs worldwide. Introduced in the 70s with a remarkably compact design, various modifications and upgrade programs (protection, night vision, etc) aimed at improving the combat effectiveness. However, the mobility of the vehicle typically remained at the original level, with a 780 hp engine, two separate manual transmissions and conventional steering with two manually operated brake levers. This driveline is the virtually unchanged for the T-90 which is considered as a modern tank but still uses two separate manual transmissions and the same old-fashioned steering system. The T-90 is equipped with a 1000 hp engine, but is no big leap forward in the mobility of the vehicle, as most of the 70’s design drawbacks persist: poor cooling system, slow manual gearboxes, difficult to handle for tired or inexperienced drivers, long vehicle downtime in case of repair, and a reliability which may fall below expectations.
But modern powerpacks for T-72/T-90 are now available. The French company SESM (member of the German group RENK, world leader in automatic transmission for tanks) offers a powerpack which improves drastically the mobility of the T-72/T-90 class. The powerpack fits into the existing chassis and only minor modifications are necessary on the inside. This way, the Powerpack is an option for new-production as well as for upgrade programs. The Powerpack comprises a fully automatic power-shift transmission, a high performance cooling system designed for hot climatic conditions and an engine with a maximum power of 1200hp. Various engine options are available. The complete Powerpack can be exchanged in less than one hour in field condition, a big advantage for the logistics, and also improving fleet availability and reducing fleet operating costs. One standard Powerpack can equip a complete class of vehicles, including T-72/T-90 and their derivatives ARV, AEV, AVLB, etc...

The system is currently available in the new Malaysian MBT PT-91M (Poland).
This powerpack should be interesting for all existing and future users of T-72/T-90, as it overcomes one of the weak points of these tanks at reasonable investment. In return, it makes T-72/T-90 an attractive option for many years to come.
SESM also offers modern powerpacks for many other tanks, incl. a 1500 hp PP for Al-Khalid (MBT2000), and also for the AMX-30 and derivatives (air defense Shahine, artillery AUF1).

“ROTZLER-based” – The New Quality Seal for Premium Recovery Vehicles

ROTZLER has been a leading supplier of high-performance winches and accessories for major OEMs of recovery vehicles (RVs) for many decades. Close cooperation with our customers has resulted in a steady increase in the number of projects for which ROTZLER is called upon to provide support for design, production, supply logistics, training sessions and much more.

Modern RVs are complex systems fitted with a variety of equipment that is used to fulfil diverse tasks, including pulling, hoisting and towing of heavy loads. But RVs equally have to satisfy other exacting demands, e.g. concerning armour protection or ensuring a high degree of mobility, which pose a great challenge for vehicle manufacturers. Thanks to ROTZLER's support, OEMs are thus free to concentrate on their core competence - vehicle manufacturing - while ROTZLER makes sure the special requirements placed on recovery equipment are met.

To this end, 2005 saw ROTZLER begin developing an overarching package that would not only include fundamental concepts for hydraulics, electronics, operation and control elements, associated products, various services as well as software developments, but would also meet all OEM demands associated with RV development. This all-round concept is based on ROTZLER's many years of experience in designing and manufacturing winches, which number among the key components aboard an RV. Coupled with modern design principles, knowledge gained during countless user trials all over the world has been key to developing innovative RV concepts. As a result, ROTZLER is ideally positioned to act both as a supplier of components and an advisor for OEMs during the vehicle design phase.

In addition to being a unified expression of conceptual, production and design principles, the new "ROTZLER-based" label certifies that only state-of-the-art technologies and products were used. The new label also stands for optimised efficiency, user-friendly operation, on-target maintenance, outstanding operational availability and excellent value for money, all of which are crucial factors - and not just for RV OEMs. Modern military organisations, in particular, know how important first-class recovery vehicles are, especially from the experience gained during past and current deployments.

The "ROTZLER-based" label is a quality seal for the finished product. All components required to achieve this end result can be obtained from ROTZLER and include equipment components, software development, system integration, maintenance tools as well as numerous other services. ROTZLER know-how forms the basis for all of these products and services. In a nutshell: "ROTZLER-based" systems are the - very literal - result of applied ROTZLER expertise.

Further information on the new "ROTZLER based" label can be obtained from the team of ROTZLER experts at EUROSATORY 2010 in Paris, hall 6, stand H701 (German Pavillon).

Eurosatory 2010 Preview

Eurosatory 2010 (14-18 June 2010) provides Iveco Defence Vehicles with the opportunity to acquaint both existing customers and other visitors with the most recent developments in our product range.

Taking pride of place on the stand at Eurosatory will be our new 8 x 8 amphibious vehicle, the SUPERAV. Designed by our engineers in Bolzano to meet an identified need for an airportable medium AFV capable of operating up to Sea State 3, SUPERAV is available in a number of variants, all based on a common hull design and drive train. The vehicle can also be equipped with a turret mounting a cannon of up to 30mm calibre.

The new 4x4 Medium Protected Vehicle (MPV) will also be on display. A wholly European development, the MPV design exploits the technical expertise of two of the major European armoured vehicle manufacturers, Iveco DV and Krauss- Maffei Wegmann (KMW) of Germany. A formal co-operation agreement between the two companies was signed in June.

Iveco is also delighted to be able to exhibit four examples of its innovative development of existing product lines to meet evolving operational requirements. The first of these is the continuing work to develop our successful LMV design to further increase its utility. Three variants are on display:
• A long wheel base, long cab version with an increased GVW, payload and capacity and further improved internal ergonomic layout
• A long wheel base, short cab version fitted with a lightweight loadbed designed and manufactured by Marshall Specialist Vehicle
• An evolution of the LMV after request of the Italian Army for a specific variant providing, among others, increased protection.

LMV Pick-up

All of these variants are designed to meet the growing need for Protected Utility vehicles, recognising the particular demands of asymmetric warfare. Iveco has two further developments which aim to meet the demands of providing logistic support in demanding and hostile conditions. Of great interest to a wide variety of countries is the Trakker chassis mounting a ballistic steel protected cab. The outstanding mobility and reliability of the well proven Trakker, combined with the industry leading protection levels provided by the cab, provides a rugged, highly survivable logistic capability with the potential for deployment in even the most demanding operational conditions. The 8 x 8 vehicle being exhibited is a water tanker currently in service with the Bundeswehr.
In parallel with this development of the Trakker based highly cost and operationally effective COTS protected logistic vehicle, Iveco has also further developed its military special High Mobility range, produced by Iveco’s Astra plant. Available in 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 configurations, the range now features a newly developed protected cab.
This uses a composite appliqué system which can be mounted on the purpose designed base cab, ensuring that the vehicle provides the crew with the maximum flexibility in providing trade-offs between protection and payload. All of these vehicles are on display at the Iveco Stand, number D501.
