The HEMTT A4 series Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck is designed, developed and manufactured by the American Company Oshkosh Defense. This the latest version of the HEMTT truck familiy. The Oshkosh M978 HEMTT A4 fuel-servicing truck, or tanker, is designed to transport 2,500 gallons of fuel to forward-arming and refueling points (FARP). The vehicle, which is part of the U.S. Army's Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV), features a more powerful drivetrain, improved suspension and a fully air-conditioned and armor-ready cab.

The M978 HEMTT A4 is motorised with a new 500 hp engine the next-generation HEMTT is faster and stronger than ever. The 500 hp Caterpillar C-15 engine offers 55 more horsepower than its predecessor, the HEMTT A2. Its Allison 4500 SP/5-speed automatic transmission, which is rated for 600 hp, offers 1750 lbs. (794 kg) of torque gross input, to handle the increased power and torque for the engine upgrade without changing gear ratios. The universal front suspension is consistent among all variants, and the electrical system is 24V using a 260A alternator and includes both 24V and 12V auxiliary power outlets.

In option the M978 HEMMT A4 can be equipped with a self-recovery winch with a capacity of 9,072 kg.
