Description
The LAMV is a 4x4 Light Armoured Multipurpose Vehicle developed and produced by the Indian Defense Company TATA Motors with technical inputs from Supacat of the UK, for vital reconnaissance mobility, protection and firepower. The LAMV was presented for the first time to the public during the defense exhibition in India, Defexpo 2014. The LAMV can be operated effectively with its modern observation, surveillance and communication equipment. This technological edge, necessary to achieve ascendancy in the tactical battlefield will have the vital operational configuration to address Urban Warfare and engagements on all terrain. The 4x4 LAMV equipped of modern modular design will have the 'stretch potential' to incorporate imperative upgrades and retain functional superiority throughout its service life. Low life cycle cost mainly is due to its indigenization. All the main subsystems share commonality with the standard vehicular aggregates that are there in service.

Armament
At Defexpo, the 4x4 LAMV was fitted with open-top turret mounted on the top of the crew compartment armed with a 12.7mm machine gun. There is also a single hatch in the roof. The 4x4 LAMC can be equipped with a full range of weapon station and smoke grenade launchers in option. The turret has a 360° azimuth manual movement and ballistic protection for the gunner side and front for NIJ (National Institute of Justice Ratings for Body Armor) level III. This armor, normally of hard or semi-rigid construction, protects against 7.62mm full-metal jacketed bullets (US military designation M80) with nominal masses of 9.7 g (150 gr.) impacting at a velocity of 838 m/s (2,750 ft/s) or less. It also provides protection against threats such as 223 Remington (5.56mm FMJ), 30 Carbine FMJ, and 12-gauge rifled slug, as well as Level I through IIIA threats. Level III body armor is clearly intended only for tactical situations when the threat warrants such protection, such as barricade confrontations involving sporting rifles.

Design and protection
The 4x4 LAMV has a 8 Ton GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) with a payload of 1.5 Ton. It can seat six persons including the crew (Commander and Driver). With a front engine, ergonomically integrated dashboard and equipment panel, enabling a better internal volume. The 4x4 LAMV integrates a monocoque composite material pod to protect the crew, with a full length high hardness steel bottom V Hull for blast protection. The POD is tillable side wise for better serviceability. It offers maximum survivability in high threat environments due to its ballistic hull design, special armour protection and high mobility. The protection varies from Stanag II (a) and (b) for blast and Stanag II for Ballistic protection. Side doors located on both sides of the vehicle allows the quick crew entry and exit.
Propulsion
The 4x4 LAMV is able to reach a maximum road speed of 105 km/h and has been configured with a powerful indigenous 210 HP water cooled turbocharged engine coupled to an automatic transmission with 5 forward and 1 reverse speeds. The engine ensures high power to weight ratio of 25HP/T with a self-recovery winch. Being an indigenous engine it exceedingly satisfies the reliability and maintainability expectations with its low operational cost and easily available service. The 4x4 LAMV has an automatic transmission, all wheel independent double wish bone type suspension with air spring and hydraulic damper. lt also has self-leveling capability with ARB in front and rear, ensuring safety and comfort for the crew during cross country move. The mobility is further enhanced with run flat tyres and CTIS.
Accessories
The crew in the pod is provided with the Driver and Commander display units, economically integrated on dashboard, and has provisions for integrating Electro Optic System, Radio, GPS, and driver assistance Camera. It is equipped with state of art ruggedized navigation unit with GPS system and Inertial positioning system in case of unavailability of GPS. The LAMV is also equipped with CCD cameras, Thermal Imagers & Laser Range Finder with detection range up to 10 km, recognition up to 6 km and identification up to 3.5 km. The 4x4 LAMV can be equipped with AFDSS (Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression System) based on customer requirements. At Defexpo 2014, the 4x4 LAMV was fitted with a telescopic mast equipped with surveillance systems mounted at the rear of the vehicle.
