Thales Advanced Air Defence is an integrated set of Thales, ThalesraytheonSystems and third party system solutions that ensures timely decision making and effective responses for the protection of military forces, key assets, nations and citizens around the globe.

Thales Advanced Air Defence leverages all of the technologies, innovations, solutions, services and capabilities that have made us world-leaders in the sector. More importantly, it is a step-change that has been shaped by our response to, and anticipation of, the challenges our customers face in today’s environment. These challenges include:
» Proliferation of new airborne threats such as missiles and UAVs and the increasing complexity of the airspace
» Protecting Air Defence assets against evolving cyber threats
» Integration and interoperability of Air Defence Systems and operation in real time within force structures
» Helping customers apply the right solutions within demanding schedules and budgets.

The key components of Thales's Advanced Air Defence capability are:
SHIELD – Air and Missile defence Solutions
SKYVIEW – Command and control Systems
CONTROL – Weapon co-ordination
GROUND – Air Surveillance radars
RAPID – Mobile integrated Weapon Systems
STAR – Missiles

At IndoDefence 2012, Thales presents the following systems on its booth

Ground Master (GM) 400:

The Ground Master (GM) 400 is a 3-D long-range air defence radar able to detect threats from both high and low altitudes; from 5 to 470 km. Its specific design (S Band, 6s rotation, Full Digital, Stacked Beam, Adaptive Doppler modes) brings a unique capability to track highly manoeuvrable low flying targets with a small Radar Cross Section whilst providing an excellent global air picture.

The GM 400 weighs 10 tons, fits inside a single 20ft ISO container and can be rapidly deployed (single truck, single C130). The GM 400 requires simplified maintenance and has a reduced life cycle cost. Manufactured by Thales for ThalesRaytheonSystems (TRS), the GM 400 was launched in 2008. Over the past three years, TRS has bolstered its leading position in the air defence radar field, winning a number of contracts encompassing 32 radars for 9 countries. These include Slovenia, Malaysia, France, Finland, Estonia, Germany, Canada and other undisclosed customers.

Ground Master (GM) 200

The Ground Master (GM) 200 is a tactical 3-D medium range air defence radar. This mobile radar is dedicated to the protection of key assets and deployed forces. The GM 200 offers outstanding performance in terms of warning delay and tracking accuracy of highly manoeuvrable targets flying at both low and high altitude. With full 3-D coverage, the GM 200 is a dual-use radar that can switch instantaneously between modes; from extended range surveillance to shorter range engagement including Counter Rocket, Artillery & Mortar (C-RAM) warning capabilities.

The GM 200 radar is a single 20ft ISO shelter operating on a truck. The GM 200 radar can integrate two operator positions within a C4I solution to manage air defence assets and can be used as a standalone sensor (operation ready with two people in less than 15 minutes). Manufactured by Thales for TRS, the GM 200 was launched in 2010 and is under production for two undisclosed customers.

At Indo Defence, TRS is demonstrating its proactive and dynamic cyber security capabilities for air operations. TRS offers a new approach to system security with its powerful, end-to-end cyber security solutions, based on extensive experience with a large, highly trained staff, and best-in-class system solutions from its parent companies, Thales Group and Raytheon Company. A cyber threat is a new weapon to neutralize air operations and defence systems. TRS is working closely with its customers to ensure that detecting and countering Cyber intrusions does not affect their missions; allowing Air Command and Control and sensor systems to continue to protect a zone, territory or country against airborne threats..

STARStreak

STARStreak is a High Velocity Missile designed to provide close air defence against conventional high speed air threats such as fixed wing fighters and late unmasking helicopters.

Thales has addressed the needs of military users around the world and introduced major improvements to provide increased range beyond 7 km, increased coverage and altitude and improved guidance precision against small targets.

The STARStreak configuration remains based on the proven principles of high velocity to defeat targets with short unmasking times. The three dart payload maximises levels of lethality and the highly accurate line of sight; laser beam riding guidance enables engagement of the smallest signature targets, which are extremely difficult to defeat and lock onto by traditional fire and forget missiles. It also allows very rapid weapon release (critical in responding to fast moving threats) and ensures positive target identification throughout the engagement phase thus reducing the risk of collateral damage.

STARStreak II is an evolution of the in-service STARStreak High Velocity Missile which was designed to provide close air defence against conventional air threats such as fixed wing fighters and late unmasking helicopter targets.

RAPIDRanger

RAPIDRanger can be integrated into a network enabled force structure and be coordinated with Early Warning Command and Control (C2) systems or it can operate in an autonomous mode for specific Missions. When equipped with a mix of both the STARStreak & Ground to Ground missile systems such as anti-armour systems, or rocket systems, RAPIDRanger has the ability to take on a wide spectrum of targets such as Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), static installations and terrorist platforms, as well as air threats, such as UAV’s, cruise missiles, pop-up helicopters and fighter ground attack aircraft.

With the increasing need for Force Protection against conventional and asymmetric threats, RAPIDRanger provides the multi-mission effects demanded by modern forces. The system weighs less than 500kg, and being of modular design, can be fitted to many types of wheeled or tracked vehicles. The RAPIDRanger open architecture enables the integration of a range of missiles from the highly effective STARStreak Air Defence Missile to anti-armour missiles and rockets such as Hellfire, Ingwe and Thales’s own Lightweight Multi-role Missile (LMM).

The main components of the system are a server driven turret and the weapon’s operator Human Machine Interface (HMI). The turret houses the stabilised Integrated Guidance Head (IGH) and supports two missile panniers. The IGH contains daylight/low light Charged Coupled Device (CCD) cameras and a thermal imager, integrated with an Automatic Target Tracker, STARStreak laser guidance unit and optional laser rangefinder.

The RAPIDRanger is designed to include an integral 360° surveillance sensor - either a passive Infra Red Search and Track (IRST) or a newly developed UHF alerter which provides the RAPIDRanger with completely autonomous system operation.
