Russian ERA protection systems can resist to the latest NATO anti tank shells 640 001A T-72A main battle tank layered with reactive armour bricks.

"Both Relict ERA and advanced protection system for perspective armoured vehicles defeat most of the modern APFSDS, including M829A2 and M829A3 shells (both included in the ammunition load of M1A2 Abrams` 120mm M256 L/44 tank gun)", the source pointed out.

He didn`t mention the designation, name and technical characteristics of the advanced protection system for the new generation of Russian armoured vehicles. "NII Stali is finishing the development of several advanced products, which will be revealed in the near future", the source added.·

He criticized the Russia`s Ministry of Defense (MoD) continuing reliance on active protection systems (APS). "Excessive sophistication, high cost, unreliability of APSs will hardly make them suitable for mass production", he said.

Previously, a source in the Russian military-industrial complex reported, that ERA protection fitted to the new T-14 Armata main battle tank (MBT) could defeat most types of modern NATO anti-tank shells, including DM63 APFSDS (included in the ammnuition load of Leopard 2A6 and Leopard 2A7 MBTs).
