The Swiss based Company Sig Sauer Inc., Newington, New Hampshire, was awarded a $580,217,000 firm-fixed-price contract for the XM17 Modular Handgun System including handgun, accessories and ammunition to replace the current U.S; Army Beretta M9 with a a variant of the Sig Sauer P320 9x19 Parabellum.

The XM17 draft request for proposals was launched in June 2015, to offer a new pistol more effective and lethal than the U.S. Army’s current pistol. The plans call for the U.S. Army to purchase more than 280,000 handguns from a single vendor, with full rate production scheduled for 2018. The Army also plans to buy approximately 7,000 compact versions of the handgun. The other military services participating in the XM17 program may order an additional 212,000 systems.

The U.S. Army on Thursday, January 19, 2017, awarded Sig Sauer a contract worth $580 million to make the service’s next service pistol.

The U.S. Army in December down-selected to two finalists for the competition: Sig and Glock, which had submitted its Glock 17 and Glock 19 models for consideration. Given the size of the contract, Glock is widely expected to protest the decision.

Sig Sauer beat out Glock Inc., FN America and Beretta USA, the maker of the current M9 9mm service pistol, in the competition for the Modular Handgun System, or MHS, program.

The Beretta is the U.S. Army's pistol since 1985, the military uses other handguns, including Sig Sauers, particularly in special operations. A variant of the Sig Sauer P320 will replace the M9 Beretta, the Army's pistol of choice for more than 30 years.

The M9 lightweight, semi-automatic pistol has been designed and manufactured by Beretta to replace the U.S. Army M1911A1 .45 caliber pistol and .38 caliber revolvers.

According Sig Sauer the P320 model product as "modular" and "adaptable," with interchangeable grips, multiple sizes and calibers that can be converted between 9mm, .357SIG and .40SGW.
