"The servicemen will start learning to operate advanced Buk-M2 air defense missile systems in mid-May at the air defense training center in Orenburg [in the south Urals]," the press office said. The troops will undergo a six-month training course that will culminate in a field live-firing exercise.

"During the training course, the crews will study the operational capabilities of the system and take examinations in safety measures. During the practical part of the training course, the servicemen will learn to load the launchers with missiles and operate the system’s electronic equipment and perform simulated missile launches," the press office said. When the servicemen complete the training course, they will return to their base in Buryatiya with the advanced Buk-M2 systems.

The Buk-M2 air defense missile system was developed in 1988 but its serial production began 15 years later. Now, the system is among the most effective weapons of the same class. The Buk-M2 system has a range of 50 kilometers, a target engagement altitude of 0.01-25 kilometers, a multiple target engagement capability of 24 targets and a deployment time of five minutes. The speed of targets the system can handle is 1,100 m/s.
