Iran planning military-technical cooperation with Russia
The Iranian military has shown interest in the Russian-made S-400 Triumph (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, Sukhoi Su-30SM (Flanker-C) multirole fighter and other military hardware, a source in Russia’s defense industry told journalists on Monday February 15.

"During the Iranian defense minister’s visit to Moscow, special attention is expected to be paid to further military-technical cooperation between the two nations. For instance, Iran would like to buy the cutting-edge S-400 Triumph SAM system and it makes no secret of the fact," the source said.

He said Iranian Defense Minister Hossain Dehghan planned to discuss the import and licence production of Su-30SM multirole fighters during his visit to Russia. In addition, the Iranian military has taken an interest in the Bastion (SSC-5 Stooge) coastal defense missile system, Yakovlev Yak-130 (Mitten) combat trainer, Mi-8/17 (Hip) helicopters, frigates and diesel-electric submarines.

At the same time, the source opined, "our military-technical cooperation with Iran will be emphasizing bilateral programs in the near future. In the first place, this goes for the weapons systems, in which development Iran has made progress in design and scientific terms and has relevant manufacturing facilities as well - combat hardware for ground forces, specifically, armored vehicles, and naval systems as well."
