Description
The 5N63S (later 30N6E) or NATO code name "Flap Lid B" is an engagement/fire control radar. The 5N63/30N6 equipment is described as being a 'multifunction, four co-ordinating, mono-impulse, impulse Doppler' tracking and missile guidance radar that forms part of the S-300P (5N63 variant), S-300PM (modified (for track-by-missile configuration) 5N63 variant) and S-300PMU1 (30N6/30N6E (export)/30N6E1 (export) variants) SAM systems.

A phased-array antenna is used on a truck-mounted and provides 360° coverage in azimuth. The transport vehicle of the 30N6 Flap Lid B is composed of 8x8 truck chassis with a crew cab mounted at the left, front of the vehicle. Two containers are mounted to the backside of the chassis. The antenna of the radar 30N6 Flap Lid B has a rectangular form and is fixed on the 1° container behind the compartment driver. On the road position, the antenna is lying on the roof of the first container. The combined FLAP LID-B radar/engagement control vehicle has the 2.75 m2 planar array antenna on a box-like antenna mount and support systems container. When traveling the array is carried horizontally, and when deployed it is raised above the container to an angle of approximately 60º.

The 30N6 Flap Lid B is primarily an engagement radar designed to track targets and guide missiles to impact using a command link channel. The absence of dedicated directional antennas on this system indicates that the commands are transmitted via a specialized waveform emitted by the main array. The Flap Lid radar uses a transmissive passive shifter technology phased array, with a space feed into the rear plane of the antenna.

| The Flap Lid's antenna stows flat on the roof of the radar cabin, which was initially deployed on a trailer towed by a Ural-357, KrAZ-255, or KrAZ-260 6x6 tractor. The S-300PS saw the 5N63 Flap Lid engagement radar transplanted onto the high mobility 8x8 MAZ-7910 vehicle derived from the MAZ-543. The rehosted radar became the 5N63S Flap Lid B (Samochodnyy/Self-propelled). |
| Combat Use |
| The 30N6 Flap Lid B engagement radar and S-300 launchers are set up for firing in 5 minutes and rapidly scoot away after a missile shot to evade US Air Force Weasels. The improved 5N63S Flap Lid B radar had the capability to concurrently engage six targets, and guide two missiles against each target. The phased array beam steering angular range was extended to permit instantaneous coverage of a 90-degree sector, comparable to the SPY-1 Aegis radar. The equipment is further noted as offering 'high' resolution and 'good' countermeasures resistance. Within the S-300PMU1 system, 30N6 Flap Lid Bis is used for stand-alone target acquisition/target designation or in conjunction with the 36D6 NATO code "Thin Shield" or 76N6 NATO code 'Clam Shell' radars. |
