In January 2016, the French Company Renault Trucks Defense (RTD) has signed a contract with the DGA (Procurement agency of the French Army) for the delivery of 443 Special Forces vehicles including 240 VLFS (Light Vehicle Special Forces and 203 PLFS (Heavy Vehicle Special Forces). In February 2017, RTD has delivered a first batch of 25 PLFS to the French Special Forces.

The VLFS unveiled at SOFINS 2017 was a prototype, but the French DGA (Procurement agency of the French Army) expects the first delivery for 2018.

The VLFS (Light Vehicle Special Forces) is a completely new design of combat vehicle made by Renault Trucks Defense to response to the news needs of French Special Forces for a light wheeled long-range patrol vehicle.

The VLFS will have a maximum weight of 3,800 kg and can carry a total of 5 military personnel with the driver and commander at the front and 3 additional seats at the rear. The vehicle is based on an open top architecture offering maximum situation awareness. That type of vehicles can also be more easily transported by military transport aircraft for rapid deployment.

The design of the vehicle is adapted to the request of the French Special Forces with no windscreen at the front and no doors on side. The vehicle is armed with a ring mount circular ring which is armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun and a swivel station is mounted at the front of the commander position which is armed with a 7.62mm machine gun.
