General Dynamics European Land Systems and Excalibur Group from Czech Republic join their strengths to market the ASCOD light tracked armoured vehicle to offer a modern solution to replace old Soviet-made BMP-1 and BMP-2 in Eastern Countries.

The new ASCOD offers higher level of protection than its predecessor currently in service with the Spanish Armed Forces under the name of Pizarro and in Austria under the name of Ulan. Vehicle has an advanced modular armor and innovative mine protection. Hull floor has a special shape, plus there is a layer of add-on composite armor. Also vehicle has a higher ground clearance due to redesigned suspension. Crew and passengers are seated on mine blast resistant seats.
     
     
The ASCOD APC presented during te live demonstration at the test range of TATRA factory in Koprivnice (Czech Republic) was fitted with a Rafael dual-axis, gyro-stabilized Remote Weapon Station (RWS) mounted at the top front right of the troops compartment which is armed with a 12,7mm machine gun. This RWS features full stabilization between the weapon’s Line of Fire (LOF) and the sighting system’s Line Of Sight (LOS) for superior targeting and high hit probability.

The hull of the ASCOD is of all-welded steel armour construction which provides, by a modular system, full protection against attack from 7.62 × 51 mm small arms fire through a full 360º. Over the frontal 60º arc, the vehicle is protected against 14.5 mm API (Armour-Piercing Incendiary) attack. The vehicle can offer a protection up to Level 4/5 STANAG 4569.

The ASCOD uses a torsion bar and trailing arm type suspension with seven dual rubber-tyred roadwheels either side, drive sprocket at the front, idler at the rear and three track-return rollers. Rotary dampers are provided at the first and sixth roadwheel stations and a hydraulic track tensioning system operated by the driver is fitted as standard. It uses also new large rubber tracks to improve its mobility in snow or muddy terrain.

Survivability, mobility and reliability are the main features of this modular medium weight armoured vehicle. ASCOD stands for speed, optimal protection and immediate performance day and night regardless of weather conditions. The ASCOD can be easily transported by military transport aircraft.
