|
Iran unveiled its latest home-made new main battle tank called "TIAM" on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, in a ceremony attended by Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan. Some few months ago, Itran has unveiled another main battle tank called "Sabalan".

| The new Iranian MBT Tiam seems to be based on American-made M48 tracked tank chassis armed with an M68 105 mm rifled gun which is used on other main battle tank as the American M48A5, M60 and the first version of the M1 Abrams. Second armament of the TIAM includes a 7.62mm coaxial machine mounted to the right of the main armament and one Soviet-made 12.7mm DShK heavy machine gun is mounted on swivel station at the fron of commander hatch. Standard equipment of the TIAM includes new fire control system and communication equipment. Thhe front and the top of the turret is fitted with an explosive reactive armour package using large metallic blocks to increase protection against against shaped charge warheads of modern antitank guided missiles (ATGMs). The same armour package is mounted at the front of the hull and on each side. The engine is mounted to the immediate rear of the bulkhead separating the engine and fighting compartments and the transmission is at the rear of the vehicle. The torsion bar suspension consists of six dual rubber-tyred roadwheels with the idler at the front, drive sprocket at the rear and five return rollers on each side. The upper part of the suspension on each side is protected by armour plates. |
