Volgograd Tractor Plant from Russia started the development of new BMD-5 airborne tracked IFV.
The Russian Company Volgograd Tractor Plant has started the development of a new tracked airborne armoured infantry fighting vehicle called BMD-5. This vehicle will be a full new design and will have a different layout from the previous generation of airborne armoured vehicles IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) as the BMD-1, BMD-2, BMD-3, BMD-4, and the latest variant, the BMD-4M.
     
The Russian Company Volgograd Tractor Plant has started the development of a new tracked airborne armoured infantry fighting vehicle called BMD-5. This vehicle will be a full new design and will have a different layout from the previous generation of airborne armoured vehicles IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) as the BMD-1, BMD-2, BMD-3M, BMD-4, and the latest variant, the BMD-4M. The BMD-5 could be equipped with a remotely operated turret armed with one 100mm caliber gun, coupled to a 30mm cannon and a 7.62mm PKT coaxial machine gun as the BMP-3 Dragoon. The proposed layout for the new BMD-5 places the crew in the chassis of the vehicle behind the engine transmission compartment, which provides additional protection, he added, noting that the designs also provided for additional interior space for the crew and an enlarged hatch for easier troop deployment.

For the old generation of BMD airborne armoured vehicle, the engine is located at the rear of the vehicle, for the BMD-5 the engine is at the front to increase the internal space of the troops compartment at the rear of the chassis.

The BMD-5 will be fitted with a remotely operated weapon station armed with one 100mm caliber gun, coupled to a 30mm cannon and a 7.62mm PKT coaxial machine gun mounted to the right of the main armament. The 100mm gun is also able to fire 9M117 Bastion (AT-12 Stabber) anti-tank guided missiles.

In September 2015, Volgograd Tractor Plant has presented the BMP-3 Dragoon fitted with a remotely operated weapon station at RAE (Russian Arms Expo), the BMD-5 could be equipped with a turret similar to the Dragoon vehicle.

A power-operated hydraulic ramp will be fitted at the rear of the troops compartment to offer more protection for the paratroopers when entering and leaving the vehicle. The ramp has also a manual door in case of failure of tha main system. For the previous versions of BMD vehicles, the soldiers leave and enter in the vehicle from roof hatches.

The BMD-5 standard equipment will include a new computerized fire control system (FCS) Vityaz to increase accuracy and hit probability against static and moving targets. The Vityaz FCS is jamming-resistant.
