Russia will be able to deliver S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran only if a new contract is signed because the two countries' previous deal was annulled, a source in one of Russia's military-technological cooperation agencies told Interfax-AVN on Friday, April 3, 2015.

"If Iran's arms embargo is lifted, Russia will be ready to deliver advanced air defense missile systems to this country," he said.
"They will not necessarily be S-300PMU1 systems, which were not delivered because an arms embargo was imposed on Iran," the source said. "The previous contract was not just suspended. It was annulled. It was reported that all advance payments were returned to the customer, while the air defense systems themselves were dismantled and largely disposed of. That is why, if Tehran wants to receive Russian air defense systems, a new contract will be needed," the source said. The production of S-300PMU1 system has been discontinued, he said. "Russia will be able to offer Iran only systems from the Defense Ministry's reserve, in other words systems that have already been used. I do not think that our Iranian partners will be interested in them, especially as more advanced air defense systems such as S-300PMU-2 Favorit, S-300VM (Antey-2500) and some others, which drastically outperform their predecessors, are exported today," the source said. An $800-million deal, signed in 2007, allowed Russia to deliver six divisions of S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran, he said. |
