Russia started developing the Rys biomorphic unmanned ground vehicle
Russia is developing Rys` (Lynx) unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), according to several Russian defense sources. "Kovrov-based Signal scientific-research institute is the main developer of the Rys` UGV. The platform is supposed to be developed in six configurations, including reconnaissance, fire support, mine clearance, medevac, logistic support and combat engineer reconnaissance vehicles. Rys` will be a biomorphic robot," a source said.

"The robot will comprise integrated combat management system, steering apparatus, technical surveillance equipment, datalink, navigation system, reconnaissance equipment, locator tracking apparatus, bundled software and variable payload," the source added.

According to the requirements, the robot will have a capacity of 400 kg. Rys` is planned to be able to move over concrete, asphaltic, wooden, marble, sand, ground surfaces and to cross both broken and open fields, while saving its balance. The robot will have a ground turning radius of less than 1 m. Rys` is supposed to withstand the recoil of its organic weapon. The developers of the robot are planning to equip it with 7.62mm PKT/PKTM machinegun, disposable anti-tank grenade launcher (RPG-26, RPG-27, RPG-28 or RPG-30) or rocket-propelled assault grenade (Russian acronym: RShG). Rys will be protected against external input.

The robot is supposed to receive an advanced propulsion combined with navigation system. The robot will be able to follow the locator. Operator can manually control the UGV. Both semi-autonomous and autonomous modes of movement are integrated in the robot`s management system. Due to the instalaltion of the components of artificial intilligence, Rys` can lay the route and follow it.

Previously, the US companies, namely, Boston Dynamics and Foster-Miller developed the BigDog robot. The research was funded by Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). Russian Rys` resembles its US counterpart to a large extent. The US robot is lighter, that the Russian one. As a result, Rys` can transport heavier payload, while BigDog can carry only several backpacks. At the same time, it should be noted, that BigDog was not originally supposed to be a piece of military hardware. The development of the US robot was ceased in November 2015. The consortium of Boston Dynamics and Foster-Miller has initiated the development of the Spot robot. Spot is supposed to be a lighter modification of BigDog. The Signal institute is also developing the light variant of Rys` in conjunction with the Androidnaya Tekhnika (Android Techinics) company. The light modification of Rys` will have a capacity of approximately 100 kg.

The trials of both Rys` variants are scheduled for the first half-year of 2019.
