The S-500, a long-range air defense missile system, is expected to become the backbone of a unified aerospace defense system being formed in Russia.

"I am sure that after the development and tests, the first regimental group of S-500 will enter service for covering the center of Russia and Moscow," Demin told reporters after attending military drills on Ashuluk range ground.

Earlier, it was reported that the drills with the participation of air defense missile systems S-300 and S-400 were held within the framework of the scheduled large-scale tactical exercises combining air and missile defense forces on Ashuluk range ground in the Astrakhan region.

S-500 "Prometheus" is a Russian anti-aircraft missile system, which was developed by JSC Almaz-Antey as a new generation of anti-aircraft missile systems, in which it was is supposed to apply the principle of separate solution of tasks to destroy ballistic and aerodynamic targets. The prime goal of the complex is to counter medium range ballistic missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles, UAVs, hypersonic missiles, low-orbit satellites and space weapons launched from hypersonic aircraft, as well as attack drones and hypersonic orbital platforms.

The new S-500 will have an extended range of up to 600 kilometers and simultaneously engage up to 10 targets.
