AUSA 2016: Saab introducing next generation of signature management for the US Army
Defence and security company Saab is introducing its next generation of signature management solutions at this year’s Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) exhibition in Washington, DC. The company is building upon its advanced camouflage systems to bring true stealth capabilities to the U.S. Army’s ground troops and armored vehicles.

Intelligent camouflage systems are the future of signature management. To this end, Saab is conducting significant research and development to build true stealth capabilities into its products that will conceal military assets and help mounted and dismounted warfighters stay safe and hidden in any environment. These capabilities include new ways of detecting incoming laser threats as well as friend-or-foe identification for vehicles.

Saab began developing cutting-edge signature management products in 1957, and remains the world’s only complete system house within the domain.

“Saab already leads the industry in signature management capabilities and production,” said Brian Keller, head of Saab Defense and Security USA’s signature management unit, Barracuda. “Now, we are heavily invested making our already-world-class products even more advanced through added capabilities to meet the U.S. Army’s future needs.”

Saab Defense and Security USA has a long, successful history of meeting the U.S. Army’s signature management needs. Since 1999, the company has provided the U.S. Army with what remains the world’s most advanced static camouflage system in use today: the ULCANS (Ultra-Lightweight Camouflage Net System). ULCANS provides signature suppression in the visual, near-infrared, and thermal-infrared wavebands, and against radar threats. Available in woodland and desert versions, the net system also significantly reduces UV radiation and heat from solar radiation. A reversible ULCANS variant, as well as an Enhanced Woodland ULCANS system with SWIR defeat capability, have also been developed.

To date, Saab Defense and Security USA has produced over 750,000 ULCANS for the U.S. Army at its Barracuda facility in Lillington, North Carolina.

“Our ULCANS system is proven in the field, and it exceeds U.S government design specifications,” continued Mr. Keller. “We plan on continuing that tradition with our next generation of signature management solutions.”
Saab Barracuda is a business unit within Saab business area Dynamics.
