The Stryker is a family of 8x8 armored fighting vehicles derived from the Canadian LAV III. The Stryker vehicles were produced by General Dynamics Land Systems Canada for the United States Army.

The Stryker is based on the LAV III light-armored vehicle, which in turn was based on the Swiss MOWAG Piranha III 8x8. The overall layout of the US Army Sryker armored vehicle is similar to the Canadian LAV-III 8x8 armored but with a slightly higher roof line to the rear of the drivers station for greater internal volume.

The standard armour of the U.S. Army Stryker provides protection against firing of small arms 14.5 mm armour-piercing all round with applique armour providing protection against attack from RPG-7 anti-tank rockets. Overhead protection is against 152 mm air burst artillery munitions.

The Stryker ICV M1126 is equipped with a M151 Kongsberg Protector remote weapon station with a universal soft mount cradle, which can mount either a 0.50-caliber 12.7mm M2 heavy machine gun, MK19 40mm grenade launcher or MK240 7.62mm machine gun.

The new Stryker A1 30mm is fitted a new turret mounted on the top of the hull which is armed with a 30mm link-less, dual-feed precision long-range cannon with programmable airburst capability to support dismounted Soldiers.

The Stryker A1 30mm is built to vastly increase the vehicle's survivability, mobility and power. The Stryker A1 30mm retains seating for a 9-Soldier squad, plus a 3-Soldier crew and increased stowage. The Stryker A1 30mm enhances situational awareness via stabilized independent sight and "surround view" SA cameras, 8-inch displays in the squad compartment and the ability to select any video source at any operator station. Another updated feature is an armored closeout hatch for under-armor reload of its 30mm and 7.62mm weapons.
