Description
The DY-90/TY-90 SHORAD is a short range ground-to-air missile defense system based on the TY-90 air-to-air missile, and designed by the Chinese Company TY stands for Tian Yan (Tianyan). The DY-90 was unveiled during the 5th Zhuhai Airshow in 2004 which was essentially the original TY-90, but with an additional option of incorporating a rocket booster to increase range upon customer's request. It also is claimed to have the advantages of long range, extended detection range and robust anti-jamming capability.

Variants
- TY-90: air-to-air missile
- TY- 90 naval version: utilizing the FLS-1 system and the basic version with IR guidance, thus providing a fire-and-forget capability

Launcher unit
The main component of the towed DY-90 station is the launcher unit, which is carried on a two-wheeled A-frame trailer. When in the firing position, the wheels are removed from the ground and the trailer is stabilised on four adjustable outriggers. The launcher unit consists of a one-man firing cabin station mounted on the left side of the trailer and four missiles ready to fire on the left side of the cabin.
Missile
The DY-90 is an infrared-homing short-range air-to-air missile. The missile is fitted with an infrared-homing seeker specifically designed to operate in near earth environments where the sources interference is strong. The missile is armed with a 3kg expanding rod HE warhead and a laser fuse, with a blast radius of 5m.
Radar and control components.
The DY-90 launcher unit can be associated to the AF902 fire control radar which is equipped with an X-Band search radar, a C-Band Search/Tracking radar, a Ka-Band tracking radar and electro-optical system with TV tracking range, IR tracking range and laser range finder.
Mobility
The DY-90/TY-90 SHORAD is normally towed by a 4x4 light tactical vehicle or military truck.
Operations
The surveillance radar detects the target aircraft and then hands it over to the appropriate tracking/illumination radar unit for the engagement. The system continuous wave semi-active homing guidance principles, and, with the allocated assets, the battery can process up to 40 targets, track 12 and engage three of them simultaneously. The use of the moving target tracking processing system and frequency agility technology also gives the system good anti-jamming capability. System reaction time is 9 seconds.
