The Russian Southern Military District will test Iskander tactical missile system
The Southern Military District missile brigade will launch Iskander tactical ballistic missile system at the Kapustin Yar test range in the Astrakhan region, the district press service has reported.
"The combined arms missile brigade of the Southern Military District stationed in the Republic of Northern Ossetia-Alania has started the first tactical drills of the battalions with live launches from the Iskander tactical ballistic missile system at the Kapustin Yar test range in Astrakhan region", the district officials reported.

In the course of the drills the missile operators will drill the strikes at troop concentrations, ground targets and infrastructure assets of the simulated enemy located at a distance of up to 300 km. Following the drills, the missile brigade units will undertake a march of around 1,000 km by a combined method to the permanent base.

The missile brigade was formed in early December 2015. It has adopted for service the Iskander tactical ballistic missile system. The brigade level package contains around 50 pieces of military hardware, including self-propelled launchers, transporter-erector and command post vehicles and an information processing station.

The 9K720 Iskander tactical ballistic missile system /NATO reporting name SS-26 Stone/ is designed for destroying small and area targets in the likely enemy’s rear. The system consists of several types of vehicles, including the self-propelled launcher on MZKT chassis, transporter-erector, command post vehicle and others. The ammunition used includes the 9M723 single-stage solid fuel missile with a firing range of up to 500 km. The missile can be fitted with both conventional and cluster warhead.
