The Dutch Defense will renew Electronic Warfare (EW) systems. The current Fuchs EOV systems are very outdated and have reached the end of their technical and operational life, State Secretary Christophe van der Maat wrote on April 15.

New capabilities are desperately needed to be able to more actively protect the security of the Netherlands and Europe. There is a need for means to disturb, neutralize, mislead and/or manipulate an adversary by using the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS).

The new electronic warfare system shall be capable of establishing temporary and local dominance in the EMS. In this way, the Defense organization can protect its own operational information and command and control systems. In addition, the EA systems to be acquired must also be capable of performing contemporary tasks in the context of Cyber Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA).

It will take a while before the new capabilities are available within the Dutch defense. The first new system is expected to arrive from 2027. The project is worth €100 to 250 million. DMO/JIVC is commissioned to realize the project.

In the field of electronic warfare equipment, the Dutch Defense works with, among other things, the German-made Fuchs EOV armored 6x6 vehicles. The army has been using these vehicles since 1989, hence their obsolescence.

The Netherlands wants to collaborate, once again, with Germany on the project. At the end of 2020, both countries already signed a letter of intent to step up their efforts in the field of Electronic Warfare. Both countries need to update the EA systems whose arrival will contribute to the further development of the armed forces towards an information-driven organization, as described in the Defense Vision 2035.
