The S-350E Vityaz 50R6 is a new mobile ground-to-air defense system designed, developed, and manufactured in Russia by the Defense Company Almaz-Antey. It was unveiled for the time to the public in 2013 at the Russian Air Show in Moscow. The new air defense system also includes a more advanced radar and a launcher with 16 missiles compared to only four on the old Soviet-made S-300.

According to information published by the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) in January 2022, the S-350 air defense missile system was delivered to Russia’s Aerospace Force in the fourth quarter of 2021. Citing a source from the Russian MoD, the S-350 is also deployed in southern areas of the Russian Federation, including on the Crimean Peninsula.

A battery of S-350 consists of a 50K6 command and control vehicle, a 50N6A Fire control system with target and surveillance radar, a relay station for communication, and up to three TEL (Transporter Erector Launcher) vehicles with 12 ready-to-fire 9M96E missiles or two 9M100 short-range missiles replacing one 9M96E missile.

The missile for the S-350E Vityaz 50R6 is the 9M96 guided missile which was originally designed for the S-400 system. This missile can be used against aerial and ballistic targets with a firing range from 1.5 to 120 km and tan altitude from 10 to 30,000 m. It features passive IR homing guidance. The 9M96 is a dual-role anti-missile and anti-aircraft missile. The S-350 can also fire 9M100 guided missile to destroy aircraft, UAVs, and cruise missiles.

The S-350 Vityaz air defense system is able to detect and track up to 40 targets simultaneously while engaging eight of them with two missiles per target. All the components of the S-350 Vityaz are based on wheeled truck chassis.
