India successfully conducts second flight-test of its Pralay ballistic missile


According to information released by the Indian Ministry of Defense on December 23, 2021, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India successfully conducted a second flight test of indigenously developed conventional Surface-to-Surface missile Pralay from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on December 23, 2021.

The maiden test of the Pralay missile was conducted on December 22, 2021, from Abdul Kalam Island. It met all the mission objectives and followed the desired quasi ballistic trajectory reaching the designated target with a high degree of accuracy, validating controls, guidance system, and mission algorithms

For the first time, two consecutive flight tests of a ballistic missile have been conducted successfully on two consecutive days. The flight test met all the mission objectives. This launch proves the system in both the configurations of the missile.

In today’s launch, the ‘Pralay’ missile was tested for heavier payload and different ranges to prove the precision and lethality of the weapon. This launch was monitored by all the range sensors and instruments, including Telemetry, Radar, and Electro-Optic Tracking System deployed across the eastern coast and the downrange ships positioned near the impact point.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has congratulated DRDO and associated teams for this consecutive successful development flight trial. Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy appreciated the associated team and said, with this successful flight test, the country has proved strong design and development capabilities in defense R&D.

The Pralay is a surface-to-surface tactical short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India. According to open sources information, the Pralay missile has an operational range from 150 to 500 km. It has been developed to be highly mobile and meet the conventional tactical ballistic missile requirement of the Indian Army

The Pralay missile can carry 350 kg to 700 kg high explosive preformed fragmentation warhead, Penetration-Cum-Blast (PCB), and Runway Denial Penetration Submunition (RDPS) at a range of 150 km to 500 km which can target radar and communication installations, command and control centers, and advance airfields.
