The Director of the OCCAR Executive Administration Matteo Bisceglia and the Managing Director of Eurosam Eva Bruxmeier signed the contract for the production of the new generation of medium-range air defense systems (SAMP/T NG) for France and Italy. The contract was signed on behalf of the DGA (Direction générale de l’armement – French Army Procurement Agency) for French Air Force and SEGREDIFESA for Italian Army.

The development of the SAMP/T NG system was launched in cooperation between France and Italy in March 2021. This system implements 2 new generation radars able to track future threats at medium range (the Kronos Grand Mobile High Power of LEONARDO for Italy and the Ground Fire 300 of THALES for France) and a modern engagement module resulting from fruitful cooperation between THALES and MBDA Italy.

Following the successful preliminary design reviews in 2022, OCCAR, on behalf of DGA and SGD prepared the global production contract to secure the delivery of SAMP/T NG systems for both Nations simultaneously with the global ASTER missiles production contract.

Through an intensive negotiation, OCCAR, with the continuous involvement of EUROSAM, THALES, MBDA Italy and LEONARDO and with the strong support of DGA and SGD built an optimized production contract for both Nations. By this result, OCCAR illustrates again the will of European industries to build a strong European Air Defense system. Following this new success, OCCAR is now preparing another SAMP/T NG production contract for the Italian Air Force.

The SAMP/T NG is the new version of the SAMP/T system today in service In France and in Italy. It will be delivered in 2025. SAMP/T NG is a strategic system that offers an advanced A2/AD (Anti-Access / Area Denial) capability. SAMP/T NG is a game changer guaranteeing air sovereignty as well as protection of the armed forces and sensitive civil or military sites against all current and future threats such as cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, antiradar missiles, UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), helicopters and aircraft.

The SAMP/T NG is designed to operate in a civilian air environment; the system is capable of cooperating with friendly military aircraft. It is fully integrated into the national air defense network and fully interoperable with NATO/Coalition systems. The new SAMP/T NG extends engagement capability and provides 360-degree protection capable of simultaneously engaging any combination of air and missile threats further than 150 km.

A battery of SAMP/T NG consists of four main components including up to 48 ready-to-fire Aster missiles, one multi-function radar GF300 or KGM HP, one engagement battery, and up to 6 launcher vehicles each capable to carry 8 surface-to-air missiles. The whole system is based on wheeled military truck chassis offering high mobility in the road and off-road conditions and can be deployed in less than 30 minutes
