The VT-4 MBTs were delivered to the Nigerians on 8 April 2020 by China’s Norinco company as a part of a contract worth $152 million. In mid-January 2021, the VT4s went through their baptism of fire in Nigeria. The Nigerian military conducted an operation against Boko Haram, also known as Islamic State in West Africa.

The MBT-3000, also named VT4 for the export version, is a new generation of main battle tanks designed and manufactured by NORINCO. It is an upgraded variant of the MBT2000 (VT-1) and the latest tank model from the Type 90-II tank family. It uses technology from the Type 99A currently fielded by the Chinese Army. According to this company, the MBT-3000 benefits from the latest technology for main battle tanks specially designed to meet the challenge of high-tech warfare. Its overall performance and combat capability put this tank among the most advanced ones in the world.

Based on the VT4’s stated capabilities, this tank could be Pakistan’s most sophisticated armor platform. It is equipped with subsystems not yet available to the PA’s older tanks, such as a hard-kill APS, and it can potentially operate as a true network-enabled platform with real-time target information sharing.
