Rheinmetall has received an order from the Bundeswehr (German army) to supply a further 57 heavy tractor units in the 70-tonne payload class. Known as the “SaZgM 70t mil” in German military parlance, the unprotected heavy-duty trucks are scheduled for delivery in 2023 and 2024. The total value of the order is worth just over €50 million, including VAT. The German armed forces use the trucks primarily for transporting heavy armoured vehicles like the Leopard 2 main battle tank and the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer.

MR-2 is based on the Russian ZPU-2 twin-anti-aircraft machine guns in 14.5mm caliber. ZPU (meaning "anti-aircraft machine gun mount") is a family of anti-aircraft guns based on the Soviet 14.5×114mm KPV heavy machine gun. It entered service with the Soviet Union in 1949 and is used by over 50 countries worldwide. Quadruple (ZPU-4), double- (ZPU-2 and ZU-2) and single-barreled (ZPU-1) versions of the weapon exist. These machine guns boast bullets that carry almost double the energy compared to standard 12.7mm machine guns.

Excalibur Army’s Morana, a tactical self-propelled howitzer, is versatile, allowing for integrated operation within a standard artillery battery, as well as stand-alone task performance. It features a 155mm/52 calibre artillery gun capable of reaching targets at distances exceeding 41 kilometers. To ensure sustained operations, the 3-man crew has 45 rounds directly available.

The Czech company SVOS, in cooperation with Swedish company Saab, completed the tests of the modular MARS 4x4 vehicle in the S-330 version, which will serve as a platform for the mobile air defense system of the new generation of Saab: the RBS 70 NG. The cooperation has been running since 2019 and is a contribution to building and building partnerships that can deliver modern short-range air defense systems to meet the needs of all NATO and third-country customers.

Ukraine has an urgent need to increase its capabilities to defend against Russian missile strikes and aircraft.

The U.S. Department of Defense on May 24 announced that AM General LLC, South Bend, Indiana, was awarded a $4,653,330,000 firm-fixed-price contract for Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, trailers, kits and services to support production. Bids were solicited via the internet with two received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of Feb. 9, 2028. U.S. Army Contracting Command, Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, is the contracting activity.

BRNO, Czech Republic, May 24, 2023 - In a bid to secure one of the largest defense contracts in the Czech Republic's recent history, BAE Systems showcased its CV90 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) at the International Defence and Security Technologies Fair (IDET) 2023. The UK-based company is one of four contenders shortlisted by the Czech Ministry of Defense in its effort to replace the country's aging fleet of BVP-2s, a locally-produced version of the Soviet-made BMP-2 tracked armored IFV.

At the end of January 2023, Germany’s Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) selected Rheinmetall to remodel additional parts of its modular medical facilities. The special modular medical facility containers ordered here by the Bundeswehr will be used, for example, as food safety laboratories. The order is worth a figure in the higher-single-digit million-euro range. Work is to be completed by December 2023.

The Council has adopted a 5th wave of collaborative projects within the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) framework, with 11 new projects and a total of 15 Member States participating. The projects cover six military domains and include critical capabilities such as munitions, counter artillery and medium-size helicopter. The updated list of projects under PESCO now stands at 68.

The British Army’s Global Response Force (GRF) is being put through its paces with demanding training on Salisbury Plain Training Area, the British Army’s website reports. As the GRF, 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team (16 Air Asslt BCT) demonstrates a more agile, integrated, lethal and expeditionary Army. The Brigade has gained additional artillery, engineer, and logistic sub-units to create a third battlegroup built around its existing Royal Gurkha Rifles battalion; while 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment (1 R IRISH) joined as light recce strike infantry.

As reported by Laurent Lagneau in Opex360, the idea of developing the VBAE (Véhicule Blindé d’Aide à l’Engagement, Armored Vehicle for Engagement Support) in cooperation with Belgium – involved in SCORPION via the CaMo program (Capacité Motorisée, motorized capacity) to create a successor to the VBL is now favored. As well as the development of “technological bricks” within the framework of projects related to the Future European High Mobility Augmented Armored Systems (FAMOUS 1 and 2), funded by the European Union. French companies Nexter and Arquus are involved, as well as Krauss-Maffei Wegmann from Germany, Patria from Finland, and John Cockerill from Belgium.

The deal will see EDGE owning 80% of Mars Robotics, enabling the highly skilled and experienced engineering team to work closely with EDGE on a number of exciting projects.
