The tanks were removed from storage from the 969th tank reserve base in Urechcha (Luban district, Minsk region). The train transporting the tanks went from Urechcha station to Uspenskaya station (Rostov oblast, Russia) and then went towards Donetsk where they were scheduled to arrive on October 26. This train was formed by the 6th group of flatcars.

The Lukashenko regime has already handed over at least 94 T-72A tanks and 36 to 44 Ural trucks to the Russian army.

The Belarus army operated 537 tanks: 517 T-72B and 20 T-72B3 MBTs. It is supposed to have an unknown number of T-72As in store and one may presume that the tanks given to the Russian army come from that stock.

On the T-72A version appearing in 1979, the coincidence rangefinder was replaced with a laser rangefinder and an electronic fire control was added. The turret front and top were heavily reinforced with composite armour (nicknamed Dolly Parton by US intelligence) and provisions for mounting reactive armour. Smoke grenade launchers and flipper armour mount on front mudguards were also added. Some internal changes were also made.
