According to a contract published by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) on September 30, 2021, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Grand Prairie, Texas, was awarded a $62,028,000 modification (P00004) to contract W31P4Q-21-C-0042 for the engineering and manufacturing development requirement for the Precision Strike Missile Weapon System.

The Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) is the next-generation, long-range precision-strike missile designed for the U.S. Army’s PrSM program by the American company Lockheed Martin. This new surface-to-surface weapon system will deliver enhanced capabilities to attack, neutralize, suppress and destroy targets using missile-delivered indirect fires out to 499+ kilometers. PrSM provides the Joint Force Commander with increased range, lethality, survivability and missile load out. These enhanced capabilities are critical to the successful execution of Fires in support of Multi-Domain Operations.
Lockheed Martin’s PrSM missile contains an insensitive munition (IM) propulsion system and IM energetic payload capable of defeating the PrSM target set. It also features an open systems architecture design for maximum affordability and flexibility, is modular for future growth and HIMARS and M270 compatible.
The Precision Strike Missile (PrSM)is a surface-to-surface, all weather, precision-strike guided missile fired from the M270A1 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). PrSM is intended to replace current MLRS and HIMARS missiles and doubles the current rate-of-fire,with two missiles per launch pod.
A ballistic missile with a cluster munition-compliant payload, the PrSM is to be used for attacking threat air defense systems, missile launchers, command and control centers, troop assembly/staging areas, and high-payoff targets throughout the battlefield. The missile is designed to exceed a range of more than 500 kilometers. Lockheed Martin is currently the PrSM’s only prime contractor.
The PrSM, which should enter service in 2023, will be a surface-to-surface, all-weather, precision-strike guided missile fired from the M270A1 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and the M142 HIMARS High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.
