Iveco Medium Protected Vehicle (MPV) Ambulance at DSEI 2013.

At DSEI 2013, Iveco showcases the MPV Ambulance. The vehicle dates from a cooperation agreement signed in 2008 between Iveco DV and Krauss Maffei Wegmann (KMW) of Germany for the development of a new military vehicle family in the 18 to 25 tonne weight range. Since then, the MPV family has moved forward significantly, with 4x4 Ambulances and Route Clearance vehicles currently in production.

The MPV family is based on the Trakker military off the shelf truck chassis, already in service with a number of European Armies, including the UK, Germany and Switzerland, combined with a protected crew cell. This cell incorporates the driver’s cab and the mission compartment, and offers more than 13m3 volume in the standard 4x4 version, increasing to 16 m3 for the ambulance/Intensive treatment unit variant, as discussed below.
The maximum combat weight of up to 18 tonnes and a chassis capable of mastering the toughest of terrains gives MPV 4x4 excellent tactical mobility on all missions. The inherent flexibility of the platform design allows it to be adapted to meet a wide variety of roles and configurations whilst maintaining the level of protection of the standard variant.

In addition to benefiting from all features of the standard MPV 4x4 platform, the increased volume which the Ambulance/Intensive Treatment Unit offers over the standard MPV 4x4 platform, allows the casualty treatment area to be optimised. The vehicle is equipped with two stretchers, which can be loaded using an onboard system, and will carry a crew of 4, namely a driver, commander, medical officer and nurse. The stretcher loading system, which has been patented by Iveco, allows stretchers to be loaded automatically at a height of 1200 mm from the ground.

The vehicle is equipped with an NBC protection system and will provide a safe working environment in which lifesaving treatment can be administered, even close to the front line. The additional headroom enables the doctor or nurse to stand, greatly facilitating effective treatment. The Italian Army has already ordered Ambulance and Route Clearance versions of MPV (designated VTMM by the Italian Army), which are currently under delivery.
