Iran has doubled the range of radar systems used for the Hawk Mersad air defense system.
Iran has doubled the range of the area covered by the radar systems of its medium range Hawk (named Shahin in Iran) air defense missile shield and improved its tracking and targeting capability by 40%, Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli announced on Monday, February 3, 2014.

“The range of this radar has been doubled in both mid- and low-altitude coverage and a unique electronic warfare capability has also been added to the Hawk defense system in its both mid- and low-altitude sections,” Esmayeeli said.

He said that the trace and tracking radar system of the Hawk missile shield has also been developed, and this has improved the tracking and targeting capability of the system up to 40%.

Esmayeeli also underlined that the missile defense shield can operate for 24 hours a day with a very high precision capability.

Late 2012, Iranian air defense units exercised targeting Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with anti-aircraft Hawk missiles during the massive military drills in the Eastern parts of the country.

On the second day of the exercises, the air defense units fired a Hawk missile at a drone and destroyed it.

The missile was fired by a mobile air defense system on a missile-launching vehicle.

Also at the time, Esmayeeli announced that Iran has optimized the mid-range Hawk air defense missiles.

"The Hawk missiles which are good for medium altitudes have been optimized and indigenized in the country," Esmayeeli told reporters on the sidelines of "Modafe'an-e Aseman-e Velayat 4 (Defenders of Velayat Skies 4)" air defense drills in November 2102.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems.

The country has repeatedly made it clear that its military might is merely based on the state's defense doctrine of deterrence and that it poses no threat to other countries.

The Hawk missile is manufactured in Iran under the name of Shahin. In 2010 Iran announced that it will be mass-producing its next generation of air defense system called Mersad which would integrate with the Shahin missile.

Mersad is an Iranian advanced medium range Air defense system developed in 2010 It fires Shahin missiles, a local upgrade version of the American MIM-23 Hawk Surface-to-air missiles. It uses a series of domestically produced Radars and Electronic Devices.

The Hawk missile has a range of 24 km with a 54 kg warhead, but the Shahin missiles is capable of tracing and targeting any enemy aircrafts at 70 to 150 km.

As the American MIM-23 Hawk, the Mersad Shahin missile launcher unit is transported and launched from a towed triple-missile launcher.
