Description
MILAN ER is the latest development of the combat-proven MILAN weapon system that has already been selected by over 40 customers around the world. Experience gained from recent conflicts has highlighted the need for a mobile weapon system featuring the versatility and lethality to engage various types of static and moving targets in both urban and open terrains. Today’s requirements are for a weapon that combines lethality and precision and the ability to address all the threats confronted on the battlefield, from the most heavily armed moving tank to alternative targets such as fortifications and infrastructures. Based on the concept of Semi Automatic Command to Line Of Sight (SACLOS) with permanent Man In The Loop (MITL) the weapon system MILAN ER complies with the increasingly complex rules of engagement under which regular forces are required to operate. The first guided firing of the missile took place in May 2006. The first test of the complete system, firing post and missile, took place in October 2006. The ADT firing post was qualified by the DGA in January 2007 followed by a successful series of evaluation trials completed in March 2007. In December 2006, South Africa placed the first export order for the MILAN ADT firing post with MILAN 3 missiles. In August 2007, EADS confirmed reports that Libya is to place an order for the MILAN ER. A contract is expected to be signed in 2008.

Missile
MILAN ER missile maintains all the performance and operational features of the MILAN family (ergonomics, reliability, accuracy, robustness and flexibility of tactical use) but also features the next generation technologies necessary to meet the new requirements in combat while keeping total life cycle costs compatible with the budgetary constraints of the armed forces. These new technologies feature in new extended response ammunition with an enhanced warhead, propulsion system, in-flight maneuverability and operating range. The MILAN ER missile has a range extended to 3,000 m (opposed to the 2,000m of the prvious generation MILAN ammunition) and a new, multi-effect warhead that can penetrate 1,000mm Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) or Rolled Homogenous Armour (RHA), or more than 3m of reinforced concrete. For optimal terminal effectiveness, a new concept of tandem charge is now contained in the warhead. This employs a dual-mode front charge to defeat early and new generation explosive reactive armor. The MILAN ER is equipped with the SACLOS system (Semi-Automatic Command to Line Of Sight). The SACLOS system is wire-guided for anti-jamming efficiency in clutter, keeping the man-in-the-loop facility for the precise identification of targets, the permanent control of the mission and avoiding collateral damage in complex conditions.
Firing post
The MILAN ADT firing post has an integrated thermal imager with a video output that allows remote operation. With two missiles, the ADT weighs less than 45kg. The firing post consists of a sighting system and a guidance assembly mounted on a tripod. The infrared localizer measures the angular deviation between the missile and the line of sight to the target. The transmission of guidance data by wire and the new MILAN 3 CCD localizer provide jamming resistance.
MILAN’s new lightweight digital firing post opens up a new approach to training, maintenance and support with: :Digitised technology
• Integrated camera
• Magnification x 7 and x 21
• Azimuth indicator
• Designed for enhanced training and maintenance tools
• Designed for Network-Centric Warfare integration
• Fully compatible with MILAN equipment and platforms
Accessories
The system also features a new, fully digitized day/night firing post which has resulted in additional operating benefits: video inputs/outputs for remote operation; remote vision; new instruction and training tools; built-in-test; maintenance tools and geopositioning tools. Importantly, for existing MILAN customers, the new firing post will also accept earlier generations of MILAN missiles. The MILAN ER can be also used with remote control for the firing sequence.
