The introduction of the SMOKE SHIELD range follows a comprehensive review of smoke grenades used by NATO and Non-NATO forces around the world. The review identified that safety concerns are limiting in the deployment and use of current smoke grenades, both in training and on operations, where dismounted soldiers are increasingly working in close proximity to armoured vehicles.

The incendiary nature of current smoke grenades means that they are rarely fired in training, and vehicles operating in an urban scenario take the precautionary measure of removing their grenades. The SMOKE SHIELD grenade range solves both these requirements.

Each calibre has three variants:

1. Multi-spectral screening capability providing the same level of protection and response as the current in-service grenades, which are ideally suited to the open and multi-threat battlespace.
2. A non-incendiary, non-toxic visual screening grenade that is safe to use in an urban environment and in close proximity to dismounted assets. This provides a highly effective screen in urban scenarios as well as a very cost effective and safe training variant.
3. An anti-riot and crowd clearance variant based on CS smoke to maintain a safe standoff to protect vehicles and dismounted troops on Peace Enforcement operations.

The variants have been designed to maximise training and operation opportunities whilst minimising cost of ownership.

David Codling, Sales & Business Development Director, commented “SMOKE SHIELD VLGs are a key element in our new business objectives and IDEX is the ideal forum at which to display the range to a very demanding clientele. We are a market leader in compact hand thrown smoke grenades, customers can expect the same high product quality and customer support with SMOKE SHIELD VLGs”
