IDEX 2017: Mercedes highlights well-known FGA 14.5 special-purpose chassis family
Mercedes' know-how is under the spotlight at IDEX 2017. Since the start of series production of the FGA 14.5 chassis in 2010, numerous international special-purpose vehicle manufacturers have taken up the opportunity to build vehicles on the basis of the successful Unimog concept. Mercedes-Benz is working on the further development of its special-purpose chassis family.

With the Special Chassis FGA 14.5, Mercedes-Benz offers manufacturers of military and civilian vehicles a platform adaptable to the changed requirements of modern security and defence forces in the 21st century.

A world first on the FGA 14.5 special chassis is the all-LED lighting system, which is available in both a civilian and a defence force variant. The FGA 14.5 is the first vehicle from Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks to use only energy-efficient LEDs for its lighting. Use of the single LED technology in combination with specially developed lens optics results in unparalleled light output. Due to its closeness to the daylight spectrum, LED is the light source which best accommodates the way the human eye sees, thus relieving the strain on the driver in the interest of improved safety. In conjunction with the compact, robust design of the new, shock-resistant LED headlamps, which also have fording capability and a service life that is 30 times longer than that of conventional bulbs, the result is genuine added value in terms of durability, reliability and ease of maintenance.

The powertrain of the FGA 14.5 features a Mercedes-Benz OM 926 diesel engine which generates an output of 225 kW (306 hp) and torque of up to 1200 Nm from a displacement of 7.2 l. In the OM 926, the FGA 14.5 has a proven engine which is also capable of running on low-grade fuels.

The drive concept of the special FGA 14.5 chassis is based on a fully automatic transmission configured for demanding operations. Six gears, two different low ratio modes (Basic and Off-Road) and an automatic torque converter transmission allow uninterrupted tractive power and therefore improved performance where traction is difficult, e.g. on sandy surfaces.

The power supply in the FGA 14.5 is provided by a new alternator concept with a capacity of up to 400 A. The alternator system is protected from soiling and offers adequate capacity for complex systems. A well-balanced power supply for both the body (i.e. for the extensive electronic consumers) and the special chassis is guaranteed by a new energy management system.

The equipment package of the FGA 14.5 is rounded off by the powerful auxiliary heater with a total output of 12 kW and altitude adjustment up to 2500 m, and an A/C compressor system offering an output of 9 kW as standard, optionally upgradable to 16 kW (for hot regions and/or large cabs).
