Turkey and UAE develop Rabdan new 8x8 armoured vehicle for United Arab Emirates army. | |||
At the International Defense Exhibition IDEX, the Turkish Company Otokar has signed a foreign partnership with United Arab Emirates (UAE) to produce and sell 400 8x8 armored vehicles worth $661 million. The contract will be overtaken by the Al Jasoor Heavy Vehicles Industries, a joint company established by Otokar and Tawazun. At IDEX 2017, Tawazun has displayed the Rabdan, the new 8x8 armoured vehicle is based on the Turkish-made Otokar Arma wheeled vehicle.

At the booth of Tawazun in the outside exhibition area of IDEX 2017, the UAE Company Al Jasoor Heavy Vehicles Industries has presented for the first time a prototype of the Rabdan 8x8 armoured in Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) configuration.
The Rabdan was fitted with a two-man turret similar to the Russian-made BMP-3 tracked armoured infantry vehicle which is also in service with the UAE armed forces. The BMP-3 turret is armed one 100mm 2A70 semi-automatic rifled gun / missile launcher, which is stabilized in two axes and can fire either 3UOF HE-FRAG rounds or 3UBK10 anti-tank guided missiles. Second armament includes one 30 mm 2A72 coaxial cannon and one 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun. Some few years ago, the UAE armed forces has launched a request for a new combat vehicle to replace the BMP-3 with a more mobile 8x8 armoured vehicle. The UAE is the largest international military operator of BMP-3 IFV. Between 1992 and 2000 around 600 BMP-3s were delivered to UAE. According first specifications released by the UAE Company Al Jasoor Heavy Vehicles Industries, the Rabdan has the capacity to carried a total 12 military personnel including driver and commander. It has gross vehicle weight (GVW) from 28,000 kg to 30,000 kg. The Rabdan is motorized with a Caterpillar 12.5 liters diesel engine developing 600 hp. coupled to an Allison 4500 automatic transmission with 6 forward and 1 reverse gears. The vehicle can run at a maximum speed of 105 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 700 km. The Rabdan offers ballistic protection up to STANAG Level 4 and mine protection up to STANAG Level 4a/b. The vehicle is fully amphibious and propelled in the water at a maximum speed of 10 km/h thanks to two propellers mounted under the hull rear. |
