Russian Helicopters eyes on South-Asian military helicopters market at IDEAS 2014
Russian Helicopters, part of State Corporation Rostec, is showcasing its latest helicopters at International Defence Exhibition & Seminar (IDEAS 2014) in Karachi on 1-4 December. On display in collaboration with Rosoboronexport – the company’s partner for exports of military aircraft – the Mi-171A2, the Mi-171E and Mi-17V-5 transports, as well as the Mi-35M transport and combat helicopter.

South Asia is one of the fastest-growing markets for helicopters worldwide. At IDEAS 2014 Russian Helicopters is presenting t its latest models to companies from the region, and provide briefings on post-service support and maintenance for Russian-built helicopters.

The Mi-171E and Mi-17V-5 are designed to carry personnel and cargo, and can fly a range of missions to supply and evacuate troops. The medium multirole Mi-171E is the principal transport helicopter of the Pakistani Armed Forces. Mi-8/17-series helicopters are widely used across South Asia, and are often an indispensable means of transport and form the core of military helicopter fleets.

The Mi-35M transport and combat helicopter was developed from the legendary Mi-24 and uses the latest systems and technologies. It is designed to destroy enemy armoured vehicles, provide supporting firepower for ground troops, drop parachute troops, evacuate wounded personnel, and transport goods inside the cabin and on an external sling. The aircraft combines rich military operational experience with the latest developments in helicopter-building, and is in service with the armed forces of Russia, Brazil, Azerbaijan and other countries.

Russian Helicopters is also highlighting the future Mi-171A2 multipurpose helicopter, which has performed its first test flight last week. The Mi-171A2 was developed by Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, part of Russian Helicopters. Many of the solutions developed during design work on the Mi-171A2 have been incorporated into other helicopters in the Mi-8/17 family, which has long helped ensure they meet the latest international standards.

The Mi-171A2 is one of the most eagerly awaited developments in Russian helicopter building. The helicopter represents the future of the world-famous Mi-8/17 helicopter, with significant changes to its design and on-board equipment that improve its flight capabilities and reduce operational costs. The main differences between the Mi-171A2 and previous models are: new, more powerful and more economic Klimov VK-2500PS-03 engines, boasting BARK-6V-7C digital regulation and control systems; new main rotor boasting composite blades, improved aerodynamics and X-type antitorque; and fundamentally new radio-electronic systems integrating pilot and navigation suite with open-architecture KBO-17, developed at the Ulyanovsk Instrument Design Bureau, part of Radioelectronic Technologies.
