The
Centauro ARV (Armoured Recovery Vehicle ) is new member of the Italian-made
Centauro Wheeled Main Gun System family. The Centauro Armoured Recovery
Vehicle shares all the characteristics of mobility and versatility typical
of Centauro family. The Centauro ARV is designed and manufactured by
the Italian consortium Iveco - OtoMelara that was established in 1985,
on equal 50/50 participation, to design, develop and manufacture new
generation of main battle tank and combat armoured vehicles. Oto Melara
designs and produces the weapon system while Iveco designs and produces
the hull and all the automotive components. The Centauro ARV provides
the recovery of a same class vehicle with the help of a complete towing
set and a 20 tons winch.

Armament |
For
the Centauro ARV variant, the main turret of the Centauro 105
mm is removed and replaced by one small turret which is equipped
with a remote weapon system armed with 7.62 mm caliber machine
gun. A second machine gun is pintle mounted on the crew commander
hatch. Eight additional grenade launchers 8x80 mm complete the
armament of the Centauro ARV for close defense capability. |
Design
and protection |
The
Centauro ARV construction is based on a high hardness monocoque
steel hull which provides the crew with protection from fire
small arms fire 12.7 mm caliber and shell splinters all around.
The front of the vehicle is armored to provide a protection
against 20 mm projectiles. An additional armour protection could
be provided for improved battlefield survivability. |
Propulsion |
The
Centauro ARV is motorized with a an IVECO VTCA V-6 turbocharged
diesel developing 550 hp at 2,100 rpm. The vehicle uses an 8x8
hydropneumatic suspension with powered steering on the front
four and last two roadwheels. |
Accessories |
As
armoured recovery vehicle, the Centauro ARV is fiited with a
a nine tons crane mounted on the of the hull which ensures the
capability to carry a complete power pack for "on-field"
intervention. During these operations the crew depends on the
hydraulic outriggers stabilizers. At the front, the vehicle
is equipped with a dozer blade which allows ground leveling,
barricades arrangements and auto uplifting. An external auxiliary
power unit gives the capability to operate with the engine off
and ensures sockets for quickelectric connections. Hydraulic
or pneumatic plugs can be available on the vehicle according
to customer requirements. The standard equipment of Centauro
ARV includes collective NBC protection system with individual
backup, fire extinguishing and anti-explosion system in the
crew cabin, auxiliary heater, laser warning system and anti-explosion
fuel tanks.
