Ugandan rebels Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, simultaneously attacked an army camp as well as positions of the UN peacekeepers in Opira, a village in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), local sources told the Chinese press agency Xinhua.

Indian soldiers of the United Nations mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) sit on the top of tanks at a military post in Kibati, some 10 km from Goma, and some 15 km from the frontline on August 13, 2012.

Authorities of the UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) refused to give the provisional death toll of the fighting, but promised to give more details later. However, local sources told Xinhua the attack left at least eight people dead.

The assailants were later repulsed by the DR Congo army and MONUSCO peacekeepers, after hours of fighting.

Military sources said the assailants wanted to get more food supplies and weapons from the Congolese army camp.

ADF rebels have launched numerous attacks against the army since the start of the year. On Tuesday, a MONUSCO helicopter was badly damaged after coming under attack from the same rebels in the east of the country.

MONUSCO took over from an earlier UN peacekeeping operation – the United Nations Organization Mission in Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) – on 1 July 2010. It was done in accordance with Security Council resolution 1925 PDF Document of 28 May to reflect the new phase reached in the country.
