The Israeli Air Force received its first Arrow 3 missile defense system on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, this new air defense system is considered to be one of the most advanced in the world.

The Arrow 3 is the latest generation to the Arrow Weapon System, is the upper tier in the Arrow family of weapons that incorporates new communications, guidance and seeker technology to combat a continually advancing threat.

The Arrow 3 is an anti-ballistic air defense missile system , jointly funded and developed by Israel and the United States. The first tests of the Arrow 3 was performed in 2011, During the tests, a model of the interceptor missile was launched in order to check the starting and propulsion system, as well as other tracking sensors.

The Arrow 3 should be able to intercept ballistic missiles at altitudes of over 100 km and with a reported range of up to 2,400 km.

The Arrow 3 consists of a two-stage interceptor that will destroy incoming ballistic missiles and ICBMs with an exo-atmospheric kill vehicle that will also be to maneuver midair to intercept its target. The interceptor is designed to operate in space, inciting speculation that Arrow 3 could be used as an anti-satellite weapon.

In December 2015, Israeli Defense Ministry announced that it has successfully carried out a test on locking on a missile target from space using its Arrow 3 missile defense system that was developed jointly with the United States.
