Ukraine resident picture shows Russian army 2S1 self-propelled howitzer on the move in Sevastopol.
Russia is taking additional steps to ensure security at its naval facilities on the Crimean Peninsula amid the growing political unrest in Ukraine, Said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. A Russian military source said earlier on Wednesday that security check points at several Black Sea Fleet facilities had been strengthened with armored vehicles.

On Friday, armed men in military fatigues marched into the principal airport in Simferopol, the capital of Ukraine's most contentious region, Crimea.

Until Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1954 transferred Crimea to what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, the territory was officially a part of Russia.

The Black Sea Fleet of Russian Navy maintains its main base in the port of Sevastopol and several auxiliary naval installations around the peninsula.

Ukraine’s parliament had requested the emergency meeting at the Security Council to monitor the situation in Crimea and for action to be taken in the event of the country’s sovereignty being violated.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would defend Ukraine's Russians "uncompromisingly." At the same time, President Vladimir Putin ordered military exercises on Ukraine's border and put 150,000 troops on alert. Russia's Interfax news agency said the Defense Ministry reported that "constant air patrols are being carried out by fighter jets in the border regions."

According Interfax reports with reference to military sources in the city, Russian soldiers have taken control f the airport in Sevastopol.
