Russia's armed forces put into service new long-range missile for the S-300V4 air defense system
Russia’s military have put into service a long-range missile for the S-300V4 air defense system, a source in the country’s Defense Ministry told TASS on Thursday, March 5. "The missile range reaches 400 kilometers [250 miles]," the source said. The new missile successfully passed the state tests late last year, he said. First, the S-300V4 systems in the Western military district are to be equipped with these missiles, the source added.

The supplies of S-300V4 systems to Russia’s Ground Forces began only in 2014. The servicemen received two division sets of these systems which are considered to be more efficient than their predecessors by up to 2.5 times. Russian officials gave no further details about this new enhanced missile.

Late last year, the press service of the Almaz Antey air defense systems manufacturer told TASS the new longer range missiles for the S-300V4 systems were being developed, giving no further details.


According to russian news agency Sputnik, the system is able to destroy air targets at ranges of up to 400 kilometers and at an altitude of 37 kilometers. The missile may hit tacticall and medium range ballistic missiles.

The S-300V4 air defense missile system is a subsequent upgrade of the S-300V and S-300VM. 
The S-300V4 is able to track and destroy aerial threats and ballistic missile at a distance of 300 km maximum. This missile system is able to destroy the elements of long-range high-accuracy weapons in flight, as well as defend areal facilities against strikes by ballistic targets.

In December 2013, Alexander Leononv, chief of the Russian air defense troops of Land Forces has announced the delivery of the new S-300V4.

The three-year contract for the supply of S-300V4, the Defense Ministry and Concern PVO "Almaz-Antey" was signed in 2013. The first three battalions of S-300V4 will be delivered and put into operation in the Southern Military District. According to some reports, the Russian Army has more than two thousands of S-300 missile systems in different variants.
