"The new system boils down to having separate blocks of the training for the units, with the blocks including theoretical instruction in classrooms, learning the skills with the use of training aids and simulators on base and then honing them at training areas.

Units are rotated into and out of the training facilities on a weekly basis. Thus, in any given months, troops learn theory and consolidate the knowledge using training facilities on base for two weeks and then dedicate a week to practical training at the training areas, where they stay day and night," the news release says.

The curriculum provides for at least 50% of range practice and driving training to be conducted at night. The new approach to training maximizes the number of service members sharpening their fighting skills without being distracted from training by doing kitchen police or pulling alert duty.

The combat training in the Southern Military District emphasizes learning the new combat gear being received, including T-72B3 tanks, BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, BTR-82A armored personnel carriers, etc. Over 15,000 troops and more than 2,000 combat and other vehicles have been used in training at upwards of 30 training areas in line with the curriculum.
