Spain "has exerted continuous efforts within the EU since the beginning of the conflict in that Arab country in order to find a political and peaceful solution," said Margallo. He called on the Syrian opposition to talk with the moderate forces within the Syrian regime in order to end the humanitarian crisis. "The only solution for the crisis in Syria is the political solution," said the Spanish top diplomat after a meeting between Syrian opposition groups in Madrid.

The Syrian conflict, ongoing since March 2011, killed more than 80,000 people and displaced millions of people inside and outside the country.

Al-Khateeb said the meeting of the opposition groups in Madrid was not aimed at creating a new political entity but to salvage the Syrian people. The groups, he added, agreed on the unity of the Syrian people and to meet in two weeks to discuss the forthcoming meeting on Syria in Geneva.

He said the devastation in Syria was a result of the international community's inaction. "The whole world will pay the price of everyday wasted to putting an end to the Syrian regime and its violent actions which have
begun to echo on neighboring countries."

Al-Khateeb denied that US was supplying the opposition with arms, saying the Americans were only providing humanitarian assistance.
