French company in the research and development, Rigomer Engineering develop solutions that revolutionize the foundations of many civil and military systems in the field of kinetic energy absorption / dissipation.

One of the new product shown at Milipol 2015 by Rigomer Engineering is the Ratel, a removable bollard which is able to block motor vehicle. One of the main advantage of the system, it can be reused thanks to the use of one aluminium honeycomb cartridge fitted inside a mobile rail which absorbs the kinetic energy from the shock of the car against the bollard.

After the crash, the Ratel can be reloaded with a new aluminium honeycomb cartridge to be used again.

The front of the Ratel is equipped with two small spades to anchor the system in the ground. When the car hits the system a metal pin pierces the oil pan to destroy the engine and prevent the vehicle to make a reverse.

The Ratel has a total weight of 48 kg and has the capacity to block a car of a maximum weight of 2,000 kg at a maximum speed of 64 km/H.

The Ratel can be easily installed in few minutes to protect sensitive areas from vehicle operators, "who plan or carry out acts of property destruction, incite terrorism, or cause the deaths of civilian, industrial or military populations"

Rigomer has also design a new protective bollard using the Ratel system but integrated to an urban furniture as flowerpot, called Antaries.

The use of a motor vehicle as a murder weapon has long been known both in reality and in fiction, and there have been vehicle rampages in which an individual used a car to attack an institution or attack a group of pedestrians. The 21st century has seen a rise in terrorist car attacks carried out as acts of terrorism by individuals committed to an ideology.
