Tyron showcases its Carbon-ATR runflat tyre at MSPO 2018

At MSPO 2018, Tyron showcases its Carbon-ATR-lightweight carbon fibre rubber runflat tyre which achieves up to 50% weight reduction, has successfully undergone initial trials. During the trials the runflat was put through a series of events to confirm that the design of the runflat was able to withstand the effects of off-road driving as well as driving on tarmac.

“We have worked hard exploring the use of new materials to save weight. This is being driven by the changes in military demands for rapid deployment and in a lot of cases amphibious capability. The Carbon-ATR achieve this weight reduction significantly, for example on an 8x8 on 1400R20 tyres, the minimum unsprung weight reduction for the vehicle compared to our steel insert ATRs so far is 240kg and we expect to improve this still further,” said Mr Glazebrook, Chief Executive of Tyron Runflat. “Reducing the weight on an armoured vehicle is the goal of all vehicle designer’s, as lower weight means increased mobility and better fuel economy” added Richard Glazebrook,.

Tyron runflats have a patented core to give it strength and a frame to maximise the performance of the rubber. Carbon-ATR - a carbon fibre core reduces weight while maintaining strength Not only are Carbon-ATR manufactured from rubber, their multi part design makes it easy to change a tyre on the side of the road without special tools, the weight reduction of the Carbon-ATR makes this even easier. Tyron’s runflats have been proven to easily exceed the Finabel standards and can keep going at over 50kmph for distances in excess of 100km.

The new Carbon-ATR will initially be available for both the 1400R20 and 1600R20 tyres where the greatest weight saving can be achieved. Tyron will continue developing its unique Runflat systems using this new technology.

Since 1977 Tyron has been developing a range of tyre safety features which are designed to keep vehicles moving safely at speed and for distances well in excess of standard requirements. In the early 80’s Tyron was contacted by the UK MoD to develop a range of steel bands for the Land Rover steel wheels. These were not only far stronger than the aluminium bands but also solved the problem of ‘catalytic’ reaction between the two different metals where the aluminium bands were prone to welding onto the steel wheels preventing removal of tyres when they needed to be changed.

In 2008 Tyron invented the world’s first ever multi piece rubber run flat All Terrain Runflat (ATR) insert which can be fitted in the field to both military split rims and ordinary tubeless wheels, giving excellent off road capabilities with run flat capability of up to 100 km which far exceeds the Finabel standard. In 2009 Tyron developed the unique R series wheel for armoured 4x4, 6x6 and cash carrying vehicles. This super strong alloy wheel, with a load rating of 1650kg, incorporates an ingenious beadlock [a mechanical device that secures the bead of a tire to the wheel of a vehicle] design. When fitted with the ATR they allow travel on or off road for over 50km with all tyres deflated.
