Nordic – Baltic Eight countries agreed to strengthen their defence cooperation
The Defence Ministers of the Nordic and Baltic Eight (NB8) Cooperation are taking part at their yearly meeting. From 10 to 12 November they meet at Denmark, which has the rotating presidency for 2015. This year’s focus is on enhancing their defence cooperation between them, with other countries in the area and NATO, in effort to promote regional security, with the regard to the latest developments in Ukraine.

On the first day of their meeting, they approved Lithuania and Sweden’s proposal to boost cooperation in areas such as hybrid warfare, cyber security, joint exercises and operations, upgrading and joint procurement of equipment and rendering of assistance to Georgia and Ukraine under the Nordic-Baltic Assistance Programme.

The Nordic – Baltic Eight Cooperation group is comprised of the Nordic countries, namely Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Denmark, and the Baltic ones, namely Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. It was formed in 1992 in an effort to promote cooperation in various areas and political levels. More than 50 meetings take place every year, involving the prime ministers, ministers, while subject matter experts meet several times throughout a year. The areas they focus on are foreign affairs; defence; security; energy; finance; transport; education; environment; labour and justice.
